Why am I not able to loosen the belt tensioner? I have tried turning both bolts (torx and hex) and neither do a thing to loosen it. I need to get a new belt on tonight so my truck isnt sitting in the walmart parking lot for the weekend. I have the style with the hydraulic dampener.
edit- sorry I forgot my trucks info: 94 f250 7.3l turbo.
I am about ready to shoot this freaking truck with all the problems its giving me.
There should be a square hole in the back behind the pulley for you to insert a ratchet or breaker bar for leverage. Just pull against the spring and remove the belt from it. There shouldn't be any bolts to loosen. Mine doesn't have the serpentine belt but if it's like all the others I have seen it should be the same.
Oop's, I just saw the part about the hydraulic dampener. I don't know about them, sorry.
you have to get on the hex bolt and if i remember right push it towards the drivers side to take the tension off the belt then slip the belt off one of the tensioner then do that in reverse to re-install those tensioners do have alot of tension i always use a cheater bar or 2 wrenches hooked together to get leverage the belts go on pretty snug so you may fight it some
Normally by using the tensioner idler bolt head, rotate the tensioner arm so pressure is removed from the belt slip the belt off the vacuum pump.......
Route your new belt then rotate the tensioner arm so pressure is removed, now slip the belt on the vacuum pump pulley.

A 3/8 drive w/ extension inserted in the center of the tensioner pulley wheel and rotated towards passenger side, no bolts need to be removed (align the fan blades so you have full rotation. If that doesn't work then, as I have experienced, the tensioner itself is shot. Good luck.
Hey thanks for the replys everybody. I think I am having a problem with the tensioner. I am supposed to put the wrench on the hex bolt on the pully itself right? When I try and turn the bolt in either direction the bolt just spins (tightening) or comes out (loosening). Would it work to just stick a prybar in their and try to loosen it that way?
I would be wondering if your not supposed to remove/loosen one end of the shock strut or is it stuck...
Am I supposed to remove the shock? The main reason I am having so much trouble with this is that I have never had a vehicle with a tensioner like this. My jeeps all had bolts that you turn to move the power steering pump instead.
I cant afford a new tensioner at all because I just got laid off and my work is withholding my paycheck because they are broke.
i don't think there is a hex bolt, it's a 1/2 inch square that you put your 1/2 inch breaker bar or ratchet in. it looks something like this here. it's the square hole in the center.

i have put 2 tensioners and 3 belts on my 94 and i have the hex nut in the middle of the pully on the tensioner on mine.i also do not have the shock on mine nor have i seen one with it.
