I have a 75 F250 4x4 with a 390 and a C6 tranny. I tried idling up someones driveway, not to steep-maybe 20 degrees gradiant-and it rolled backwards and I had to use the gas pedal to get it up there, or get it moving foreward again. This might be a common problem with such heavy trucks, but I have another example. When I start the truck when it is cold, it will not go in gear, any foreward gear anyway (it will go in reverse though). Is my trasmission slipping? If so how bad? Where can I get a new one?
IT DOES SOUND LIKE YOUR TRANNY IS SLIPPING! THE VALVE BODY IS FULL OF SMALL VALVES WITH O RING SEALS, THE SEALS BECOME HARD AND BRITTLE OVER THE YEARS OF USE. WHEN THE TRANNY IS COLD, FLUID SEEPS BY THE SEALS MAKING IT NOT GO IN GEAR, OR SOMETHING TO THAT EFFECT. THE BEST THING TO DO IS TAKE IT TO A GOOD TRANNY SHOP TO HAVE IT REBUILT. IT WILL BE THE EASYEST AND CHAEPEST WAY TO GO
a friend of mine had a ch**y van that blew the tranny, so he got a new one from a "reputable" rebuild place in the milwaukee area. and had them install it. it lasted 2 months. tey put another one in. that lasted 6 mo. yet another one was installed, it lasted 2 years. thay said sorry, warranty is up. no more free replacements. i agree with the previous post. your best bet is to use yours and get it professionally rebuilt. it will be alot cheaper, plus you can have done to it whatever you want. harder shift, extra clutches, etc. besides it is the same amount of work for you, the only down side is the down time. but if you schedule an appt. with your trans guy you could easily have it back in a day or less.
I had the same problem and brought the truck in for a complete rebuild. the next day the trany shop called and said it was done and all i owed was 35 bucks. the problem was fluid level, athough the stick said it was full it was far from. im not sudgesting you over fill your tranny but it worked for me.
Buy 1 qt of fluid and add 1/2 of it and see if there is any changes. Pull the dip stick and smell it for a burn smell. If it smells burned, take to a good local tranny shop and have it rebuilt.
