Winter Oils

Fellas,
Seems it is a topic of great debate in other diesel forums, one of many arguments to say the least.

Question stands as this, in the winter, do you change from 15W40 if you use it?

Do you go synthetic or stay dino?

Chosen brand from preference or facts, either is good?

Do you run a weight or type year round?

Thanks

Currently i run Rotella 15W40. Just with the temps we have been getting that are abnormal and were for two straight weeks, the starting seemed to be affected slightly. It aint getting any warmer!

As far as I know with Rotella the only 5w/40 they have is synthetic. I dose make a difference on startup on very cold mornings but its 20 dollars a gallon. Anyone know of a dino 5w/40?

90 F and below SAE 10W-30
0 F and above SAE 15W-40
30 F and above SAE 30

Minimum API grade SF/CD or SF/CE

Synthetic oil will do better in extreme heat or extreme cold.

-45, synthetic oil may be the difference between an engine that starts or one that does not start.

Sometimes cost is not really important when you consider walking or riding in -45 degree weather.

This is a regional debate really. For the east coast of Jersey, 15w40 year round. Use to use Rotella but switched to Motorcraft for the 5qt convienence at a 4 qt price.
If it got really cold here, below-20, I would consider running a 30 weight.

There's a little store here called WALMART. They stock both Motorcraft and Rotella. The price difference is 05 cents but the motorcraft is 5 qt unlike the rotella 4 qt. So 2 jugs of oil instead of 3.
Also WALMART stocks Motorcraft filters (some). I get my FL1995 for $9 and change. With the stroke filter it bumps the capacity up a qt so I top it off with a qt of Lucas stabalizer. I have no oil burning issues with the Motorcraft so it works for me and the price is right.

Walmart here on the island of BC is totally different. If you can find something you need, it is either way overpriced or just went out of stock. I have bad luck there. I go there for undershirts and socks for my uniform. Oh and CD's they dont have the limits like the states.

I'm running Delo 15W40 in the '00 PSD and the '86 IDI has Castrol in it (came with it in it). I'm going to switch the IDI to Delo shortly.

I have never been in a wallmart in NY that I remember, and they stock different things in different areas but all of them that I have looked for oil in had rotella, a lot of them even have tractor hydrolic oil in 2 and 5 gallon cans.
PS I hate supporting wallmart but when you are in a truck your options are limited sometimes.
