Actually, liner cavitation and coolant nucleate-boiling LOOK the same, but come from different sources.

When combustion occurs, the liners actually expand ever-so-slightly. When they "snap back", they create a localized pressure drop, which makes the coolant form bubbles on the liner. When these vacuum-induced bubbles collapse, they actually gouge the surface. Coolant chemistry comes into play here; nitrates in the coolant form a protective barrier on the surface of the liner to keep the bubbles from gouging; and when they do, it "heals" the metal. This is why nitrate levels are so important (and IMHO, Ford's nitrate levels are FAR too low).

"Normal" nucleate boiling is "mere" heat transfer. It's a more efficient transfer of heat in a theoretical sense when the water is stationary because of the amount of heat necessary to covert the water to steam. Things rarely stay so simple, though, when the coolant starts moving.

Come to think of it these Ford motors are probably a dry cylinder too. Does any one know? I have never heard of any one replacing liners on them so most likely they are dry.
I will check my parts book. I have seen rebuild kits but expect the liners are dry. The two 801 Fords I have rebuilt one had NO sleeves and one with dry sleeves. Guess which one had a big gash from a wrist pin?

Since the Perkins engines can run up to 10,000 hours before tear down I am sure they have no damage that is coolant related. I think the gas and diesel versions use the same block.
