Well it goes in Monday - have some noise under the hood upon throttle release. It sounds like a aftercooler hose, but may be turbo related. The condition will not show its face when parked, just under load. Cant get any volunteers to stand on bumper with hood up going down the road to listen. I guess its too cold for all my friends!
Turbo boost is really high in part throttle positions cruising down the road, but will drop off when floored. We spent some time looking under the hood but to no avail.
Yes please keep us updated. I hope its nothing minor, as if you have problems with this truck, I fear we may never see you in another blue oval vehicle again!
Well, had the truck in today - changed air filter and both fuel filters (guess they start somewhere). the noise has not repeated itself lately but the part throttle turbo boost is still too high. I will do some research into this - maybe turbo, or maybe aftercooler related.
Pisses me off!!!
Also - 14 mpg at 110 kph!
Well... It would be alot of work, but in the end chances are you would end up with a much more reliable motor, along with just as much, if not more power (depending how much ya want) as a 6.4!
I was just joking anyways, in a brand new vehicle theres no way I would do a swap like that, least not till the warranty ran out
My employee has a 5.9, and I know what you mean about the engine. He has a programmer, and is currently running over 18 mpg in winter driving with lots of idling, 35 inch tires, and a heavy foot! He now has 200000 km on it and the biggest thing he has done under the hood is routine maintenance. Wards Dmax has been the same way - 150000 kms, programmed, heavy foot, big tires, nothing other than routine maintenance, and closer to 20 mpg!
Ive heard that the duramaxes got really good economy, as well as had excellent speed.
Ill be honest too, I havent read much about the 6.4's but I have been hearing they werent as problematic as the 6.0's. Seems like every guy I talk to that has one, says they love the power from them, nothing but minor "new truck" type problems, and absolutely hate the fuel mileage of them haha.
I dont think the 6.4 feels much different than my 6.0 for power, stock vs stock. The new interior introduced in 2008 is really makes the previous trucks feel crude, just in the same manner that the 2005 F150 did to previous models.
There are typically less problems with the 6.4. A few that surface are the rad issues, plugged DPF's, leaky intercoolers (aftercoolers??), and embarassing fuel mileage. For some reason my boost is very high and the fuel mileage (driving around with idling, etc) has droppped from the 13 range to closer to the 11 mark - this is the last few days since it warmed up a bit, not when it was really cold.
From what I have heard all the new deisels are hard on fuel no matter what the brand. We have both a '08 Duramax and '08 6.4l at work, and from what I have seen the 6.4l is a little harder on fuel but it is in a f450(with a 4.30 axle) that does a lot of pulling and the Duramax is in a one ton with sevice body, not sure what rear end is in that truck but I think it like a 3.73 or so.
I think the days of excellent fuel mileage from a diesel are gone with all the extra crap they have to put on them.
Too bad because with the technology today, if they didnt have to put the emissions crap on them, we could be driving around in 500 horse trucks, that got an easy 25 mpg!
I wonder if the GVW on these trucks exempts them from the requirement that vehicles produced by any company must get a certain mpg average for all they sell?
