Hello
Ive almost got my 79 F-100 back together but i cant get the pass side header past the starter and frame rail. one of my freinds is coming over friday to help me. btw the headers are flowtech. any help would be greatly apreciated.
Well Big Rebel, When I put headers on my 78, and I'm not saying this is right but, I had to take the motor mount loose and jack the engine up! I also had the inner fender and front fender already off to make it a little bit easier. I hope that this helps.
Ok thanks. the drivers side slides right in. my truck has a huge heater/blower that is in the way. oh well i just have to wait for my friends floor jack. Move the engine to the drivers side and try to install it.
I had the same problem with my headers. What I did was drag my son away from the phone, take the starter off and put the atarter and headers in at the same time - one of us held the atarter against the side of the block while at the same time sliding the headers and the starter into position. Tighten up the starter first and then the header. One problem you might encounter is the clearance between the passenger side header collector flange and the crossmember. I had the local muffler shop shorten the collector by about 2 inches.
I had a shop put the headers on my 302 and it took them over 4 hours to do it!. They had to cut out the crossmember to fit them in. Weather they needed to or not in the end i dont know.
I figured out how to do it. remove the crossmember between the front one and the tranny one and the header just slips up into it. BTW on my truck i had to bend some brake lines and notch the #3 primary tube where it hit the front cross member. If any body out there that works for flowtech the #3 primary needs to be located closer to the other 3 primarys right before it enters the collecter.
I also purchased a set of flowtech headers for 78 Ford Bronco and tried attaching to engine with engine on stand and the right side could not be attached. The collector on right side layed into the oil pan preventing the header flange to be tight againts cyclinder head. I finally gave up after trying two other brands of headers.
Next time I try I will use fenderwell exits and be done with it. Just my .02 worth.
