I have a 78 F-150 w/ a 77 351M. I'm about to order an alternator from Rock Auto and they have about 15. Which one do I need (amps - 40A, 60A, 70A), and which rebuilt ones are good - Bosch, Remy, Motorcraft, Beck/Arnley?
40A was standard, 60A came as part of the Camper Special Package (possibly trailer special as well), 70A was part of the snow plow prep package. If my memory is correct, the 70A has a different, larger, housing and will require a different mounting bracket.
I always get the biggest amp one I can. But I run a winch. Your alternator should have the amp rating stamped somewhere on the housing. If you go to a bigger one than you have the mounts may be different. I have used Remy and Motorcraft brands. Not sure which is best though. Probably should get the one with longest warranty. Sorry, If I remember right all these amp ratings you listed use the same mounts. I use the 90 amp one.
I had to replace the alternator on my 79 f-100 this year and it came with the 40A. When I went to the parts store they told me they dont make a 40A replacement so i had to get the 60A instead. Even still it only cost me about 40 bucks. I believe the amperes are stamped on the ear of the alternator.

Reason: added to it
Perhaps it is time for a 3G upgrade? More amperage than any stock replacement, an super easy to wire. Small package with a potent output, internal voltage regulator makes this a real nice upgrade.
