Block Warmer not working?

I'm unsure if it's working, should it be making noise when plugged in...how do i tell? ...forgive me for stupid questions...this is my first winter with a diesel.

If it was working you should hear it sizzleing..

First make sure the BH red power plug is in the BH, then do a continuity test with a meter on the main plug wires at the grill. If there is no continuity check the wires for breaks just behind the 120V plug. Pull on the wires and you can see the break as the shielding gets smaller, cut off the end. If the 2 power wires now have continuity through the BH just replace the 3 prong plug.

I can tell if it's working when I plug it in on my other diesel... I turn the outside light on and when I plug it in, I see the light dim for an instant.

What's the block heater actually heat? Coolant or oil?

The block heater is located above the starter, underneath the truck behind the right front wheel. Listen in that area and if the wind isn't howling too much you will a sizzle or hissing.

the way i see it one that heats the coolant is better. The coolant surrounds the cylinders, which is where the heat is needed. An oil heater is good, but IMO a coolant heater works better.

You don't want to start them when it is 40 below with just a coolant heater.
I know of several rigs that were started and the owners went back in the house to let them warm up only to come out and find their motor seized up.

its no problem mechelement, ill give it a check tomorrow, the winds howling too much to hear and its too cold to comfortably spend time outside investigating it in the dark. it started up just fine today, and i have a gut feeling the warmer is working because i have a slight leak in the radiator..no bigger than a pinhole...it leaves a couple drips on the ground if it sits for a couple days wihtout being started. when it gets really cold, if i dont plug it in, there is no drips on the ground, when its plugged in, there are more drips than normal on the ground. this is kind of my poor mans guess that its working...but hey...i figured it may be a smart idea?? ha...then again...maybe not. I'll def be glad when that redone radiator gets here.

wow that would suck. That is why i dont live in places like that, now wouldnt using a synthetic or oil additive help with the cold oil starting?

If you have an exterior light near your exterior receptacle, it's probably tied into the same breaker. Plug the extension cord into your exterior receptacle and walk the female end to your truck. While plugging in your block heater, look at the exterior light. If it dims a little when you plug it in, it's working.

so your saying if i turn on the exterior motion light over the garage, and plug the truck in, (outlet is next to lightswitch) the light should dim for a second if its working?
