Yep, block heaters pull full power instantly after plugging them in, so you should see the light dim. If you don't see it dim, see if you can hear the aforementioned hissing noise.
it was just a very slight flicker of the light when i unplugged it and plugged it in, so i guess its working, tried to listen for a "sizzling" noise think i may have heard something VERY faintly but then again, the wind gusts are still wild. so who knows.
I can see and hear the electrical spark at the connection (extension cord + heater cord) when I plug in a block heater. After a while the block heater cord will get a bit warm. If you use an extension cord that is too small, laying across the top of snow, it will melt through the snow by morning.
Use a known good, heavy extension cord. 12/3 for short runs, of course larger for longer runs. Fires are not acceptable!

The home depot had a sale on the heavy duty cable, by the foot price. Essentially i made my own for the length i needed plus five feet for give. IT is way overkill but better that way imo.
My heater is working fine. Truck started like a charm today. Thanks for all the help. Random question, but do any of you happen to know off hand what the bolt patter(wheels) is on a 94 f250 4x4 diesel? ...I'm wanting new wheels, if anyone is interested in my old ones let me know!
Besides the bolt pattern, Dave S: could you possibly do me a favor and possibly give me the link for the downpipe/turbo housing upgrade for my truck. Please and thank you.
1997 and older Ford wheels will fit.
Usually Dodge wheels will fit.
GM wheels have a center hole smaller than Ford or Dodge, so grinder mods are usually required before they fit.
But their web site is a mess since they redesigned it.
Last time I looked I could not even find it.
Power Stroke links to IDI parts, IDI lnks to Stroke parts.

Dave i know you love my mutt but with my GM rims, there is no grinding at all, they fit right on. here is the Picture of them. They are solid rims, no complaints but then again i have so much else going on that i forget about them most times. Good thing i have nitro in the tires. Since i put them on about 4 months ago i have lost zero pressure. The tire place does life time checks so every two months i go to have the checked.
It says only up to 4 quarts of oil, but a guy told me he has a similar setup on his CAT diesel which has 30+ quarts of oil in it and it works great.
When i asked the ford fellas about them, they said what i thought was going to be a standard answer but was actually enlightening. They went through all of the benefits, then offered a comparable product for similar price. Then they gave me the no BS answer probably because i know all of them by first name. Yes they are beneficial, for here on vancouver island, they are not needed. It doesnt get cold enough. I always have instant oil pressue and only run rotella 10/45. Never an issue but i have been contemplating a switch to a synthetic since i have no more oil leaks. i couldnt justify it when i would lose/consume a liter + a week.
Ohh...and this may be a slightly stupid question/statement...how do you tell if your truck is factory ATS turbo? My turbo housing says Garrett on the side of it...
