I have 2000 F250 7.3 L Diesel truck with a engine oil leak that is leaking down were the transmission mounts to the engine. The dealer has looked at this when they replaced the transmission and could'nt find the leak. They said the rear main seal was ok but, it is still leaking. It does quit leaking after engine is shut off. Any ideas were this might be coming from. It has 64,000 miles on the truck.
Look on top of the engine in the valley between the heads. Is there a pool of oil? If so it is draining down the back of the engine, and dripping off the inspection plate. this leak will most likely be caused by a plug on the HPOP, or the HP oil lines themselves. If there is no oil present in the valley, then check the EBP actuator on the turbo pedistal. If thats not the problem then look to your oil cooler below the drivers side exhaust manifold, it is sealed with two o-rings per side and over time they get really hard and brittle, and will let oil drip out while running, and the force of the fan and wind blows it back to the inspection plate. If you determine its the oil cooler there is a real nice thread w/ pics on doing it yourself.
Whatever you do, dont take it back to that dealer. There are only a few culprits for oil leaks on a 7.3, and it only takes a minute or two to check them all.
EDIT: Oops, forgot to mention one, oil can also leak from the orings under the turbo pedistal. Not that common, but it can happen. Also if the top of your engine around the intercooler pipes is caked with grime and oil, it could be coming out of your intake from the CCV.
If you have the stock crankcase vent setup, check the orange boots on the spider right below and in front of the turbo. Mine were not tight and got leaky. Another thing which is less common is the rail plug on the back of the heads. They would leak quite a bit though...
