Does any know how to adjust or replace the speedo cable, My needle bounces about 5 miles an hour at lower speeds and 2 mph in higher speeds and is very annoying
Happen to me a long time ago, didn't do nothing about it and after about a month of bouncing around all over the place, it returned to normal and never done it again so far. Genuine Ford eh, fixes it's self I read a thread about this a while ago but can't remember it all that well, it has something to do with a dirty connector or something...anyway someone that knows will fill you in.
Check the pumkin on the rear axle for a VSS........vehicle speed sensor. It may be the problem. If you remove it you can check it... (undo the bolt and the VSS pulls out)
VSS ohms must be between 900-2500 measured between the terminals.
Well it wasnt on an IDI, but on my 78 PowerWagon I had the same thing going on. I found out that the speedo cable was replaced with one that was way too long and wasnt secured anywhere. When i was bouncing around on the road, it was making my needle jump. Once i replaced it with a stock replacement and secured it like it should be,everything worked good. just a though that.
not to hijack the thread, but when i swapped the transfer cases the speedo cable hookup is different, my old one was a slip in silver deal, and the new one is a black plastic hookup, looks newer style and i have no idea how to hook it up or which new cable to get or if it will even hook up to the old speedo. The speedo in the truck is from something else not sure.
your 91 will have a speedomer cable connected to the back of the trans on a 2 wheel drive, or into the back of the transfer case on a 4X4. no VSS on the 91 rear diff housing.
