Thanks for the replies ! I finally have a couple days off work so I am going to check some things out. BTW ,the ect is new , had problems with that throwing codes when I first got the truck. Anyway , I will check the temp gauge sending unit and see if I can find my thermometer and test what I really have temperature wise after she is warmed up. The truck runs great hot or cold , been getting around 15 mpg city driving and I always let her warm up a few minutes before driving. 91 F-250 4.9 L zf 5spd and 3.55's !
As it turns out , the 195' zone thermostat was opening more like 180' when I tested it in a pot of water. I double checked and it was stamped 195' .
I opted for a 195' napa thermostat this time around {tested it too!} , put her back together and now I have temp gauge readings more like what I expected and the truck seems to run even better at operating temperature.
Thanks for all the help !
BTW , turkey deep fryers also double as great thermostat testers !
Run a 195 T stat only. The colder ones will do nothing, but cause the truck to run rich and waste gas as well as have more tail pipe emissions, and increased engine wear.
Our ranger runs at the lower bit of O. When on the highway with my F-150 she will fluctuate between really low below N to just touching N.
She's boiling over by the time it hit's R, I found this out when my fan fuse blew off road.
So I would say don't believe that gauge reading too much.
Great Info Here? I'll be buying a new Thermostat and installing it before I put the truck back on the road this spring. I'll make sure to test it first so I know it's actually operating at 195°.
