Im having problems out of a 88' ford f150 4x4 and im leaning towards the ignition module. The truck at driving speeds seems to have a miss fire ( at least thats the best way i can describe the symptom). The hotter the truck gets the worse it gets. Also at around 2500-3000 rpms i can hear and feel something that I feel as an exhaust leak. the sound and vibration is only comming from the right hand side of the motor. At idle the truck runs great cold until warm up and you can hear a tick.
Something else ive noticed is my distributor cap rocks back and forth a little bit. its a new cap/rotor and also installed the cap on my 90' f150 to verify it was the correct one. Im at a loss at this point. I plan on swapping my 90' igniton module with the 88' tonight just to see but any other ideas would be awesome.
You may have a broken smog tube at the back of the motor, it's part of the air injection system and if it breaks it allows fresh air into the exhaust upstream of the O2 sensor and that makes the engine run lean and stumble. This tube is really hard to see or get at so here's a picture to show what it looks like.
The ignition modules on these systems are weak. When they get hot they do get bad, so that would make sense. But usually when they go bad, they dont work at all.
