This may be a little silly to ask but I can not come up with a reasonable answer by myself so I have to ask the experts. Anyway, if a thermostat is stuck open, how does that cause the truck to blow excessive light blue smoke? Just wondering because I just changed antifreeze and now my truck blows light blue smoke until it warms up. Thanks,Eric
Just replaced the egr. But who knows. Taking it in tomorrow and get the latest flash. Tech thinks it is injector issues. Thinks they are not set up right. He just flashed it but it was a 3 month old flash. Anyway back to the thermostat. I seen a thread here that one reason the blue smoke is because a stuck thermostat. I will find it and post it.
about the only way you'd get blue smoke from a stuck t-stat is if it never reaches operating temp, and combustion temps are low.over-fueling will also cause blue smoke. i would take the egr valve out and look inside the intake for liquid and make sure the egr cooler isn't bad. i may sound like a broken record but mine did the same blue smoke thing, which turned into a fog bank 2 weeks later, and a new egr cooler
Thanks steelhead2, I will look into it. One question though. If it were the egr cooler wouldn't the smoke smell like antifreeze? Thanks again for the input.
With our engine, blue or blue-white smoke does not necessarily mean oil:
In addition to burning oil, Ford also says these can contribute:
Excessive smoke, blue or blue/white in color, could be caused by air in the fuel, contaminated fuel, loose or plugged injectors, worn or leaking injector o-rings, or thermostat stuck open. Also PCM inputs such as MAP or ICP sensors.
Thanks bismic and cheezit. Makes a little more since to me. I really am leaning towards the thermostat, to coincidental with the antifreeze change last night. Going to pull it tomorrow and take a look. Thanks again, and if there is any other input I would appreciate it. Thanks,Eric
Well I leaned all the way to the thermostat and replaced it today in the snow. Anyway didn't fix my problem. So that was a no go on the thermostat. Took into the dealer and talked to the tech and he said bring it in and he will reflash it to the latest and greatest as of today. In fact he had to down load it before he could do the flash. He checked all my vitals and everything was great, no injector problems, no turbo problems, good egr,map and all the other sensors checked out as well.He thought the injectors weren't calibrated right. heck it didn't even cost me anything. The truck runs great and we will see if the flash helped the smoke issue when I crank it up cold. I am thinking since I gutted the cat that maybe it is smoking because the cat isn't there to burn it off. Chime in if you have any thoughts on the subject. Thanks, and I will post later what is happening. Eric
