ignition module

hey guys. I know this aint a car forum but i just bout a 1980 ford thunderbird with the 255 v-8 in. this last weekend i had some ignition problems. the vehicle has he yellow grommet ignotion module. what ended up being the problem was was the third connector is hooked to a vaccum sensor by the looks of it. I disconnected the sensor from the ignition module and runs fine now. Am I gonna hurt the ignition module with it disconnected. the car is not feedback carbed. it's a plain jane motorcraft 2bbl carb and a regular durapsark distributor. Another question is, are the yrellow and blue grommet ignition modules wired different??? I am told u cant interchange the modules. Y is that?????

That may be a barometric pressure sensor or something like that, I am not sure. This was their first attempts at modifying the timing for different driving conditions. I am not up too much on the different modules, but I would assume you have extra wires going to your module for the extra sensor.

1980 was the first year of DS-III in cars. DS-III modules were Yellow Grommet If I recall correctly.

Numberdummy has the parts manuals for the cars as well.

They are not interchangeable.

What I know for sure is the DS-III modules have a brown grommet only. DS-III also called EEC-III, was only produced in California cars and light trucks with 302 and 351 engines.

The yellow grommet is I believe a DS-II module made for high altitude. So that would be a BMAP sensor which the DS-III has as well.

ok. so the really only difference between the two modules is one has a ignition retard of sorts brought on by a map/vacum sensor. has anyone ever swapped out the three connector module for the blue????????? did it work???
