1996 7.3 - Compression check

Hi everyone, new to the site. Purchased a 1996 7.3 with cylinders 5 and 7 not contributing. Pulled all the glow plugs (all working) and found neither injector was misting when turning the engine over. Haven't determined if it's injectors or the harness. The gasket has continuity through to the injectors and glow plugs, so I am going to trace the harness back to ensure it's not bagged. Starts amazingly well on 6 cylinders, but dumps a lot of unburned fuel at about 1800 RPM in neutral, 1st and 2nd. Surprisingly, it does not smoke in 3rd, 4th and 5th when under load on the highway. Any suggestions appreciated.

I would also like to do a compression check while the covers are off, but found my adapter (U.S. General) was too short to attach the guage to it. Cut it in half, turned it down in the lathe and added a 4.5 inch extension on to it (1/8" black iron pipe). Wouldn't clear the rocker, so I turned it down, but it's still not going to clear. I see OTC makes a 6076 long reach adapter, but it looks like my modified adapter. There is very little room for an adapter and thought I would ask for advice on what the best choice is.

Might have better luck asking somebody on the diesel section. Personally know nothing about diesels, so I can't help you. Someone else may come along who can. Here's a link. Good luck !

You're welcome & good luck. You should be able to get somebody there that knows what they're talking about. Never looked at it myself. No diesel & know nothing about one. If they're anything like the rest of , they should have you fixed in no time. You may want to join the B.C. chapter if you haven't already. Here they are.
