Hi everyone, new to the site. Purchased a 1996 7.3 with cylinders 5 and 7 not contributing. Pulled the glow plugs (all working), but found neither injector was misting when turning the engine over. Haven't determined if it's injectors or the harness. The gasket has continuity through to the injectors and glow plugs, so I am going to trace the harness back to ensure it's not bagged. Starts amazingly well on 6 cylinders, but dumps a lot of unburned fuel at about 1800 RPM in neutral, 1st and 2nd. Surprisingly, it does not smoke in 3rd, 4th and 5th when under load on the highway. Any suggestions appreciated.
The problem is that I would like to do a compression check while the covers are off, but found my adapter (U.S. General) was too short to attach the guage to it. Cut it in half, turned it down in the lathe and added a 4.5 inch extension on to it (1/8" black iron pipe). Wouldn't clear the rocker, so I turned it down, but it's still not going to clear and am down to .30 wall thickness. I am going to cut the middle section out and drill a small diameter bolt for the middle section next to the rocker. I see OTC makes a 6076 long reach adapter, but it looks like my 1st modified adapter. There is very little room for an adapter and thought I would ask for advice on what the best choice is if my second attempt doesn't work.<!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig -->
I made one by welding a brand new $4 grease gun hose onto the top of a used glow plug body. Works fine and a fraction of the cost of an off the shelf PSD compression adapter.
Great idea on the adapter. I had to cut mine again, drilled a long bolt body and silver soldered it in last night. Had to turn it down about .080 this morning to clear the rocker and am waiting for the sun to warm things up. It looks like "Frankenadapter". I think I am going to follow your lead on making a new one.
I don't have a reader yet, but was told 5 and 7 failed the contribution test. While the injectors are definately not working, I want to test the wiring harness before changing out the injectors. Since 5 and 7 are both not working and share the same harness run, I am thinking it may be wiring. Either that or both injectors just happened to fail at the same time. I would think a buzz test would tell me more, but I need to get a reader first.
Another trick you could try is since you have that cover off, grab another injector outta the other 2 holes working and swap em into the dead holes and see what happens..
Good suggestion. I have ordered an O-ring kit, so will swap out injectors when it arrives. Turns out the engine has 400 psi in each cylinder. Thinking that should be good. Thanks. Tom

How many cranks per test till you got the 400 reading?
