Well I've gotten to the pump. Two of the three nuts are a bit difficult to grab onto. I managed to loosen them but can't get enough of a turn to flip the wrench and grab again. Is there a special offset wrench for this or will a stubby do? Also it appears that the timing is advanced 1/8" +/- from TDC. Am wondering whether I should install the new pump advanced from there or go back to TDC? Thanks for the input...Scott
I would probably put the new IP on in about that location.
You can always back it off if you have to much rattle, and if you have none you won't have such a hard time with the lines trying to hold it back.
Thanks for the input guys. I marked the IP location so it can be matched. Yea, Star thats
what I did. The stubby was too thick so I ground down the shoulders on it and a standard one. I saw the tool made for this task is kind of a crescent moon shape but at $63 didn't see it being cost effective. Also for future searches on this subject the three bolts that attach the pump drive gear are 12 point 5/16". Of course the two stops I made to pick one up didn't have it so I got 8mm. Works just as well.
8 mil and 5/16 is the same. Harbor freight has some pretty good quality half moons that sell for about 20 something for the whole set.
When I wrenched for a living if it wasn't snapon, mac or matco I didn't use it, But keeping tools in my trucks for drivers to use I started buying pittsburg's best quality wrenches (they make several different quality sets for some reason) at harbor freight a whole set of extra long wrenches is cheaper than a 7/16 snapon and I have yet to break or strip one.
One of the things at harbor freight i won't by are socket sets. I always end up rounding them in the socket, or they crack on me. Craftsman sockets, only SOCKETS i buy. Other tools from harbor, I have not had a problem with. My welder is a chicago electric, and I've run 5 spools of wire through it, and still on the same tip, gun, and cables. my Air compressor, while nothing impressive, has lasted longer than my dads porter cable, and dewalts of the same size. It is a harbor freight too.
Is your welder gas or flux core. I have a 300 amp mig and aluminum setup with a suitcase but I traded off my small 110 volt mac after I bought the big one and wish I had it back it was better on real light stuff.
