Retainers and locks ?
I recently send my head for rebuild. I have the matching spring with the xe256-h. I want to buy stainless steel valve but the seller told my locks will not fit with the stock retainer ? Did i have to buy the valves ,retainer and locks? He want to sell me some retainers for a small block/windsord. Did its the same? The set load 124@ 1.800" coil bind 1.925. Shims? I'm confuse... any help.

There are different height retainers available if you are having trouble getting the right installed height. Older heads had multi groove keepers that are good for nothing. Later ones had single groove keepers but with valve rotaters on the ex valve that are good for nothing. I don't believe he is ripping you off or steering you in the wrong direction here. Always buy new retainers & keepers when you replace valves. They are cheep insurance against failure.
