gutless...

my truck has had great power, has been able to pull anything ive thrown at her... gets the wheels spinning great.... easily does the speed limit... havent had much problems with her except for the fuel tank and fuel pump... but once when i got the new MC it happend.. it ideled fine... reved fine with the clutch in... but as soon as i release the clutch, it starts to choke out, bog down... and becomes plain old guttless... it set for a little bit.. and since wednesday, its been running fine... wednesday, i drove about 20 miles, no problems... thursday, drove the same(but with longer periods of rest at stops) today, it drove the 10 miles to town just fine, was doing just fine crusing around town durring lunch...... went back to school and a hour later we get out and i go to drop a buddy off at his house... starts up just fine... drives to the first stop sign just fine... and to the second... but after we get past the stop sign... its starts becoming gut less again...

i had a hard time doing even 40 today... normally that old thing easily does 60 or more with out a problem...

so whats going on with it??? time to put some new points in??? timing off?? carb messed up??? do i need to smack something with a hammer???

thanks for the help and this is the truck in my signiture...

Dont know what engine you have, but if it is a V-8 with the 2100 series carb, they should have new carb kits installed every 3 years or so due to our poor gas with alcohol. Also do the tuneup or at least file and reset points. Tiighten up intake manifold bolts which can sometimes or often work loose.

Just noticed the engine reference in your sig. May want to change fuel filter too.

Bogging down, hesitating, stumbling from a dead stop or when accelerating at speed = TYPICAL Auto-Lite/Motorcraft 2V carb problem.

The accelerator pump diaphram and check valve are his-tor-ee. Both of these parts might last a year or so, it depends...

You can buy these two parts by themselves or they come in the carb kit.

D4AZ9A586A .. Auto-Lite/Motorcraft 2V Carb Kit (Motorcraft CT499D) / Available from Ford.

Fits: 1962/74 Cars, Trucks, Bronco's and Econolines / D4AZ9A586A replaced C2AZ9A586B.

MSRP: $33.42 // FTE sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $20.05.

PARTSGUYED aka Y2KFORDPARTS.COM = Ed Olson, parts manager at MILLENNIUM FORD in Seattle (Burien) WA.

C4AZ9B559A .. Accelerator Pump Diaphram (Motorcraft CM463) / Available from Ford

C4AZ9576A .. Accelerator Pump Check Valve (Motorcraft CM825) / Available from Ford

These two parts are located behind a cover with a lever on it...at the front of the carb.

Be CAREFUL when removing this cover, there's a coil spring behind it.

Likely carb issue but suggest a quick tune up check, which takes about 5 min's. Purchased a cheap inline spark plug tester, don't have to remove plug, and remote start button, connects to battery and batt relay switch, then able to perform quick check from under the hood. When #I flashes TDC on compression pull dist. cap and check the position, and condition of the roter, and location of the timing marks, if within limits then proceed with trouble shooting.

NumberDummy beat me to it...had the same problem until I had the carb re-done with a carb kit. Runs fine, now. My buddy keeps telling me I should get a better carb for it...he prefers 4-barrels.
