There was a gentleman with a gold looking 53-56 who had one and said it didn't fit that good in the back where the tail gate & bed sides met. Other than that I haven't heard anything on them I've seen trucks with them.
I am also going to face this issue in the future. I have a Truxedo cover on my 2003 Ranger that I really like. Unfortunately, Truxedo does not make anything for my 49. The reason that the Truxedo works so well on my Ranger is that it has a rail system/channel that provides a channel the length of the box on both sides that the aluminum tubing sits in which function as cross bows that prevent sag and then the velcro attachment point is on the other side of the channel. The rear then has a rigid cross piece that tensions the cover front to rear. The covers sold for the 53 and up boxes have neither of those key design features. I think that both are needed to get/maintain a tight fitting cover. I had previously questioned Kelly at Truxedo about making a cover for the 48-50 and it went nowhere.
My thoughts have been to possibly buy a truxedo cover for a bed bigger than my 49, making a support system for the channel or rails that use the square stake pockets to support them and cutting pieces and fabric down to the size for my 49. I would incorporate the rear rigid cross piece to tension the cover front to back and have a flap coming down to the roll on the top of the tailgate with velcro on the bottom of the roll as well as the velcro on the underside of the rolled bed sides (like the pictures above)
The disadvantage is that the rail/channel structure would be very noticeable when the cover is rolled up behind the cab.
If interested I would look up some of the details on the Truxedo website to visualize how the cover works. What we really need is for Truxedo to take and develop the product.
Thanks Okie .. I see what you mean about that rear fitting.
Right now I'm still trying to figure out a soft tonneau... have anyone ever seen/used the one from LMC truck? The illustration (drawing) in their catalog shows a much larger "flap" in the back...
