Intermittent Headlight problem has returned.

Well, driving back from getting parts the other night I had my problem from two years ago rear is ugly head. Running the headlights on high beams coming out of town caused the headlights to flicker on and off after driving about 30-45 minutes. Just like last time, kicked them back down to low beams and everything was fine.

I tried to search for the wiring diagram I thought I saved from back then but to no avail. Does anyone have the headlight rewire diagram and instructions handy? Might as well tackle this beast while I have her all split open. Thanks.

i am still looking for the wiring diagram but i would bet money that the dimmer switch is dying, has bad connections or both. I had a foot dimmer switch on an old jeep truck and when i would run the high beams it would pop a fuse or just flicker out. I checked the connections on everything and it wasnt until i replaced the dimmer switch that it fixed the problem.

I second the dimmer switch but the headlight switch ford used was junk even back through the 70's.

Sounds like the circuit breaker in the main headlight switch is tripping. A new switch will fix it, but relays are a permanent fix.

I did mine basicly like this article.
Whiter Whites, Brighter Brights .: Articles

My differences were I did not use the dual beam part of the mod and I did not do the flash part of the mod.
I have read the dual beam gets the headlights rather hot with both filaments burning at the same time.

My other difference was I used 10 AWG power wire and bought new headlight sockets at Advance Auto with 12 AWG leads.

Then I went with composite clear headlights with the diamond pattern reflector and Silverstar Ultra bulbs.

Difference was night and day.
The low beam pattern control is so much better, no more getting flashes from oncoming cars thinking my high beams are on and I see way down the road when I do turn the high beams on.
I also like being able to sit behind a car in traffic with the low beams on and as long as I am not right on their bumper, I am not even lighting up the back of the drivers head.

Someone behind me with bad light alignment or high beams on really makes me mad, on of my favorite pet peaves.
And those new projector headlights are really starting to get on my nerves as well.
Those are just to bright and shine to far to be installed in some of the srivers we have on the road todays cars.
If they don't dim their lights, you can't see where you are going.
And they are off in lala land yacking on the phone or what ever it is they do when they are behind the wheel but not driving the car like they should be.

Dave, I've had a few truckers pull up behind me with their high beams on like that, not paying attention. You know your lights are terrible when theirs can reach past you and further down the road than yours can on high.

Wanted to give you guys and update while I was browsing tonight. I ordered the heavy duty harness from LMC Truck this evening, should be here in a few days. Finally will have this headlight issue fixed! It only has occurred 3 times in the past 5 years but I have a feeling there might be a day when I need them and they are not there...Better safe than sorry.

Yea I gotta do something w/ mine, one has condensation on the lens and both lenses are kinda clouded. I supplement w/ the yellow fogs when necessary. It's that slow deterioration you don't notice. Good info gentlemen....

if your lenses are cloudy get the 3M head light restoration kit, it is not some kind of cream slop you have to hand buff. It is a drill mount with progressively finer grit pads with the pastes and cream. I have yet to see anything else on the market compare at all. Aside from a professional doing it there is no match. It takes a cloudy set of headlights and makes them look factory new. You cant have damage to the inside but if it is just the outside, you are good to go. As for the clowns in the cars with HID lights, i had a guy that always left his brights on whenever he drove and i always met him on the morning commute. Well one day he was really a dick and rode behind me for a long time. i eventually slammed on the brakes, locking the rears to get him off my *** and to go around. The next day i got my rechargeable 1.5M candle power spot light and left it in the truck, for three straight days i blinded the **** out him to the point he pulled over and stopped. Took four days but i think he finally found the dimmer switch, some people.

Somewhere I have seen replacement light housings for the 87 and newer trucks that used the jeweled reflector with clear lenses.

Pricey I bet, but seeing where you are going can be priceless.

Between the twists and turns in the roads and all the deer we have running around here, seeing is worth any price.

As far as the HID projectors, it seams the drivers don't relate that extra brightness and range for them is also how much sooner they blind people.
With my west coast mirror, unless I move from my normal driving position a car with them on high have me blinded from 1/2 mile behind me.

I know, I am not the important person, they need to see where they are going.
No road courtesy any more.

The cure is 2 12 inch light force up high, 2 6 inch down low in the front. Now for the rear 2 6inch 160 watt landing lights up high on the headache rack and 2 4inch landing lights down low. It doesn'tmatter wich way they are coming from they will not dim their lights but usually apply brakes. LOL.

Going to price replacements and look into what wreckinball is suggesting. I'm not sure if mine are sealed.
I know what you guys are talking about. I'll be on cruise just rolling along, someone will come up in the left lane and just stay there with their lights in my mirror.
I don't know when it stopped but people used to be able to flash their highs and the person behind was paying enough attention to know to dim their lights. Too much stress and too big of a rush, going nowhere, for courtesy.

Yacking on the phone, reading the paper, sending and reading text messaages and surfing the internet while shaving, applying make up, styling hair, getting dressed and eating have replaced driving as a place to focus the drivers attention.

There is no wonder there are as many accidents as there are out on the highway.

Classic question and answer at a Porche dealer way back when,
Customer, "Where are the cup holders for the driver?"
Salesman, "The driver should be driving the car, not drinking."
