Today my serpentine belt shredded a few strips off and did a little slapping under the hood. I picked a new one up from Fleet Farm for $13!! When replacing it, I noticed an oil leak.
It looks like the harmonic balancer has worn a hole into the timing cover. Before I throw $200 worth of parts at a truck I got for $500, does this even sound possible? The balancer must be pretty far out of spec to do that, but the truck doesn't appear to run poorly, or at least no poorer than you would expect from a 17 year old truck with 170,000 miles.
ford used a rubber buffer between the pulley and where the balancer mounts on the crank. the pulley slips around this rubber and gets all out of whack. could be that this happened on your truck so id start there.
