Hello, I have a 351M in my '79 supercab 4X4 that I am in the prosses of redoing/restoring I live in California so I have all of the smog equipment on it. and I was wondering What kind of Horsepower and torque can I expect from it. niether the Chilton nor Haynes repair manual say. Oh yeah, it has a two barrel carb and I am going back compleatly stock on the rebuild.
Does it run now? What smog numbers does it produce?
Are you just going stock, or trying to rehab it a bit? Not a lot you can do.
One thing to watch for is the fuel evap test. AFAIK, dual tanks are exempt, otherwise, your evap system has to be good, so watch out for those connections, the canister etc.
I wouldnt go back stock if you don't have to. The 351m don't have much going for it stock. You can easily make them wake up and have great power and torque but I don't know if you can make it pass the test then. I would take the stock cam and throw it as far as I could.
I have to wait until next summer to register it then see what it will do smog-wise. It does have the single tank. so Ido have to worry about the evaporation system, My dad already went through that with his '79 Bronco they made him replace his fuel filler hose. The main reason for going stock is to get it to pass smog without any problems. That Bronco has an aftermarket cam in it and we are always fighting it to get it to Idle to smog. and also maybe to get another mile or two better gas milage.
