Stripped Flywheel, Replace?

Truck has had problems starting last couple of weeks. Last weekend it would turn over once and then starter would just spin. Pulled the starter yesterday and discovered that it wasn't fully engaging with the flywheel. It stripped about 1/16 to 1/8 inch off about 6 flywheel teeth. Taking the starter in for testing and possible rebuild. Question is can I just install a new starter or do I need to somehow fix the flywheel? See the pics of the flywheel. Thanks for advice.

Take a micro file and just file down the burrs and rough edges. the point is to make sure the bendix gear will engauge the ring gear and not get stuck on the flat edges. Just file so the teeth will mesh and you'll be fine. how are your batteries?

Thanks. I'll try the file this weekend. Batteries started draining before the starter broke. I had to recharge the batteries almost every morning. Didn't get a chance to test for parasitic draw before I removed the starter, but I think it was draining the batteries. I planned to ask the repair shop to test the starter solenoid too. Make sense?

That a good way to ask a question... Pictures are awsome. I would file it as tim said also to just remove the burs and run with it.. I would get everything tested. Take the batteries in for testing when you take in the starter? Could be just a battery problem .

Late question about this

I have a similar problem but deeper into the flywheel. Can I also just sand and go?
