Cruise control -VS- Manual Shift

Well,
I just spent a total of 8+ hrs in the dealers showroom waiting for the REPAIRS????? to be done on the cruise control that was missing from my new 2010 PSD 6sp manual rig when I bought it.

The service tech said "lets go for a ride" and I'll show up how it works. We hit the freeway and he states the following instructions to me.
1. Only works at 40mph or higher speeds.
2. ONLY WORKS in 4TH GEAR period.
3. Will not work in OD period, at any speed.

I damn near fell out of the truck, why in the Sam Hell would you have cruise control and not use it in OD. That is where the best fuel mileage should occur.

I can see not using it when towing a heavy trailer etc, but if you are traveling several hundred miles on flat open hiways, you should be able to set the cruise controll and get the best mileage possible.

FYI, at less than 2000 rpm's my speed is at 72/3 mph for OD per my GPS reading taken for the last 800 miles that is on the meter.
At 72/3 mph in 4th gear the rpm's read 3000+, I can see the fuel mileage getting zip now.

So, I need to find out from any other PSD owners (with MANUAL TRANS), if you HAVE Cruise controll, will or does yours work in OD????

I would greatly appreciate the info as I think I have been Fed a line of S--T by this service tech.

WHY HAVE CRUISE CONTROLL??
Don

all of the psd with manual transmission I drive from 98-03 would run cruise in any gear you wanted from 30mph and up. They were all factory installed But that really should not matter. I think your tech might not know how to program it?

how would the CC know which gear you're in anyway? It'll only know that you're in Neutral.

Lemme get this straight, a FORD tech claimed that Cruise control should only work in certain gears at certain speeds? The only limitation should be it won't come on under 25-30mph, which kind of takes 1st gear out of the equation. Other than that it is fair game, sounds like this "tech" needs to go back to school.

TR,
Well, the CC does know which gear you are in, as mine will only work in 4th gear and NO other gear. It know when you step on the brake or use the clutch, as it disengages the CC and the light in the dash goes off. I don't know as this is my first diesel PSD.

Does anyone know the email address to Ford Co, and I'll send them an email with the same info and see what response I get back, if any.
Tia,
Don

my best guess...

the CC doesn't know which gear you are in, but the tech didn't take the time to correctly install the switch that signals if your transmission is in Neutral. Instead of setting it up to know that you are not in neutral while in 3 and 5, he just put the switch on 4...

The CC thinks you are still in N when you are in 5.

I will guess he was just lazy.

This will be part of the system that disengages CC if you drop the transmission out of gear without touching brake or clutch.

That does not sound right...I think I would ask for a relook from a different tech. Get Ford to interface with the dealer or set you up at another location that knows what they are doing.

The computer knows what gear you are in as it does a calculation. It takes throttle position, rpm and speed and then it knows what gear you are in. I have an 09 v10 and i know that cruise works all the time. It does not make any sense why your cruise only works in 4th, I would think that there is a problem in programming the ecu.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard (well almost). Let's hope the service tech was just an idiot. If not, that would mean some engineer at Ford was the idiot.

You said your truck didn't come with cruise control, did the dealer install the ford factory CC or an aftermaket CC?

Funny when you think about it - the BS they will try to sell a customer. A soft spoken word with the shop foreman would be good. He needs to know the crap his employee is pulling.

so it doesn't know which gear you are in, but it can calculate the final drive ratio, and the only variable in there is transmission gear and clutch slippage.

Well, here's Chapter 2 info:

I called the Service Manager this AM and explained to him the problems with the cruise controll. He called me back a short time later and had an service tech/engineer from FMCO (back East somewhere) on line and had me explain what was told to me by the Reno service tech and what I had found when driving the rig home.

Per the information received from FMCO service tech: The infomation I had recieved from the Reno service tech was WRONG.

1. CC will only work at 30-40 mph or higher speeds.
2. CC will work in all gears, EXCEPT Granny Low, Reverse and Nutral.
3. CC will work in OD, "Care must be taken when towing with heavy loads etc, to keep from lugging the engine and causing damage to the trans/engine etc.

Per my local service manager (Reno), call me when you want to bring it in and I will personally see that everything will be corrected and operate in the correct manner etc.

Also found out, this AM when I was showing the better half how the bed extender works, that it is installed up side down/backwards. You have to stand on your head to read the instructions that are printed on the bed extender.

And I thought I was having a BAD DAY!!!

VAXB,
I ordered the truck with CC and found out it did not work when I was test driving it. Per a service tech that check it out with a computer that he plugged in under the dash, "it does not show up, it may not be connected or not installed". When I asked if it was not hooked up or installed, no one will tell me.
I will find out this information when I return with it tomorrow to have it correctly installed/programed etc, for the second time.

Senix,
Thank you for the info, will send info and see the response I get back.

Thanks for the info guys, I think I'll go have another shot of JD to settle down, it's been another BAD DAY in the Black Rock.

Hey, how bad can it be. You are the owner of a "2010 Publeo Gold Metalic,XLT F-350,6.4 PSD". They'll get'r fixed for you, now that you've got past the moron firewall.

Good luck and let us know.
