No hurry at all. Just that I may end up with an extra '48 F1 frame, so I pondered finding a '42-47 body to put on it. I heard they were about the same. But wanted to be sure before going on a body search.
The '48 actually extends longer past the front cross beam. If I recall correctly the shackles on the front springs are on the front of the spring on the '48 as well (but that shouldn't affect what you are planning.
Yeah, the F1 frame's front springs front (say that fast 3 times) is inside the frame through a sleeve. Here's a quick pic. Cutting the front rails off wouldn't be a problem, and leave the springs like the '48. perhaps?
Springs should be fine, the springs themselves are the same, just the mounting is different and shouldn't matter, the front axle is actually a better one to start with -- the '47 used lever shocks (I can never spell the real name :-). The '48 axle therefore has some extra material on the bottom where the tube shock mounts to. From your pict the '48 looks like it has the same arc over the front axle. The front cab mount (right above the rear front spring hanger) looks the same and in about the same spot. The second cab mount on your pict looks bigger, mine only has one hole and doesn't have the extra vertical support. My guess is that it wouldn't be too hard at all to put the older sheetmetal on the '48 frame.
