You can read specs and propaganda here on this 4x4 beefed AOD to get an idea or two on the AOD conversion. This is still cheaper than a new Gear Vendors set up, and cheaper than an E4OD, which would also require a $500+ controller on top of the trans:
An AOD is 9" shorter than a E40D. The driveshafts are very differnt and of course the mount location in your frame. I dont know about the differnce between a C6 and the E40D.
It wasnt specific if that deminsion was for the 4x4 or the 4x2 trans, but the 4x4 C-6 is something like 8 inches shorter than the 4x4 E4OD. An inch of difference I would think the driveshafts could handle b/w the AOD and C-6, but why would you want to go to a the early E4OD with its known problems just for gas mileage? A good tune-up can get you within a mpg of the E4OD mpg on that C-6 unless it is slipping terribly.
Rebuild the C6 or make the AOD swap. You don't want an E4OD from that model year anyway even if you did spend all that extra money for no reason. The E4OD is by far the longest (physical dimension), most expensive, and most difficult to install of the three units. Given that the E4OD requires a separate controller in any vehicle that wasn't originally equipped with it so that it will "know" when to shift, its just a lot of time, money and effort that isn't really necessary.
I wasnt sure which way he was switching. I think the highway millage would be consideratly better with OD. I would agree with Greystreak, C6 or AOD unless it has a E40D allready.
if you swap to an AOD you will need to purchase a new flexplate for an 88-89 crownvictoria with a 5.8/AOD. reason being is the 5.8 was never bolted to an AOD from the factory in a bronco or f150. to bad your in Virgina as i have an AOD with the proper 5.8 flex plate for sale but im in Oregon and shipping would be a killer.
Why would you need to change the flywheel? Aren't they both 164 tooth w/ the same bolt pattern? I've gone from C4 to C6 or AOD a few times & never had a problem. I had a problem with an older C4 once. I got a bellhousing for a Windsor w/ 164 tooth flywheel, but I was running a 157 tooth on a 302. I had to swap the bellhousing so the starter would engage.
