00 expedition heater core

A coworker has a 99 expedition with a front heater core leaking. She has been quoted $1000 and more to repair it.
I am a mechanic (school buses) and could make the repair but I would have to do it outside and I`m not sure I feel like messing with it. I am not familiar with the expedition and realise some work faster than others but given I`ve done this type of work for 30 years what would a reasonable estimate of how big a job is this?

It's an 8-12 hour job and requires a significant portion of the dash to be disassembled. If you decide to do it, I suggest you also look into replacing the blend door components. These are notorious for breaking and you could be saving her a big headache in the near future. There are numerous threads on here dealing with both the heater core replacement and the blend door repair.

I did this job myself (with a little help from the boyfriend--his tools!), and I've often said since then that I'd do it for 500 bucks and the part...I got step by step instructions from the thread here, everything went perfectly and very smoothly. Did it over labor day weekend, no rattles, works perfectly. It took me 12, but I could narrow it down to 8. That's like 62 bucks an hour, and the pride from doing it myself is priceless

Might I suggest that you at least disconnect the hoses for her until she can get it fixed, so the antifreeze and odor doesn't get any worse...that's the hardest part to deal with after it's all done!

Good luck!
