Buzz Kill

All the excitement came crashing down with one phone call. The truck went to the shop this morning to get the lift put on. an hour and a half later the shop calls and explains that the ball joints are bad 1/2 inch play on one side 1 inch play on the other. they also explain that the front wheel bearings are bad and need replaced, and they will only charge me $900.00 to replace everything. i might not be the smartest person but ball joints are around $31.00 each and bearings are around $25.00. $900. seems steep. wheel bearings i think i can do, are ball joints that hard to replace? the truck only has 120k on it and since i know the O/O i know it was never driven hard a day in its life. does that sound about right for these parts to go.

Most of that price is labor. you have to have special tools to change ball joints. front end rebuilds are very time consuming.

I suggest you insist on MOOG front end parts an TIMKEN bearings.

The last time I did bearings & joints the parts were over $300 and took 6 hours w/all the tools on hand.....this ain't my first rodeo.
A first time DIY'er will take much longer especially if the tools aren't on hand.
There are few tricks to getting it back together but you'll get all the help you need here.

SF-ESS This is how I changed my rotors (I had to take out the bearings to do so). https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ml#post7627132 I would give your rotors a GOOD once over, you may want to replace them if they are cracked. I would say this job is between an organizational and 3rd shop job. You can do it!
As far as the front end goes, I have know Idea. I know my front end is shot too I am waiting for the opportunity and the money to dive in to that.

Just when you do the bearings make sure tap out and in the bearing races with a brass drift unless some one else suggests something better. AND grease the new bearings w/new grease.
You Can Do IT!!!

wheel bearings are very easy to do, i got a nice set of National bearings from carquest, and it was suposed to be 120 for both sides and seals, thank god for a towing discount, it was 59.00$ for everything. i think i did both sides...? lol cant remmeber, ball joints stink, let them do it hah

yeah, ball joints are bit of a shiat job. With the time required to do what they have listed. It is in the ball park, I've heard much worse figures.

when i did my ball joints i did it in a shop that some friends of mine own so they had the lifts, press, everything... took me 8 hours to change just the ball joints. i did take some time to eat lunch and what not though. i would also recommend moog ball joints.

I dont own the lifts but I do own the press works great from changeing ujoints on semi tractors, and some smaller trucks. But you can basically figure a good day for the work especially if your unsure of what your doing.
