Paiute for white death! it is when there is moisture in the air and it is so cold it freezes and stays suspended in the air, when you breath it lacerates your lungs and you die.
when I lived in Fallon I only seen it once. the power lines were about 8 to 10" in diameter with frost/ice build up our chain link fence looked like a 10" masonry wall. and our septic tank froze.
(A folk etymology says that pogonip means "white death" because the pogonip fog is so thick you can't even see your hand. Go out in it and you'll be lost in seconds. If it lingers you'll die of starvation or exposure. Breathing pogonip can damage your lungs thus the term white death.)
