Temperature control cable

Hello everyone,

I'm new here, but I glad I ran accoss this site.
I have and F800 1986 and I need the temp contol cable that runs from the interior control head to the air blender behind the glove box. The part has been discontuied by ford. So my question is two fold. One, I found a cable online that the picture appears to have the same ends and mounts but it show it's for upto a 1979 f series and does anyone know if this will work. And second where might I get an aftermarket cable for an 1986 F series truck.

I know ther would be one in a junk yard, but with todays insurance requirements, none of the salvage yards in our area will no longer allow anyone to go and get the parts they want due to suits and this item they are not intersted in getting for you unless you want to pay $65.00 min for them to extract it for you. Wow things are a changing.

Well thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Lee

Welcome to the forum, F800man!

There is a classified section in the forum [scroll down to Marketplace].

Someone in this section might be willing to pull the part for you. Since you have less than 25 posts and can't send a private message yet, you might want to provide an e-mail address if someone responds.

My cable was broken as well. And the replacement process really wasn't that bad. Helps to have angle needle nose or some tiny channel-locks to push/pull the nut on/off.

Now as far as the new part goes...

Is there another yard perhaps that you could visit? I live somewhat between Gulfport Mississippi and New Orleans Louisiana (Geaux Saints!) and I've musta came across a hundred and one of them in the pull-a-parts.

Just checked with my LMC Catalog. They list several different cables in there varying in prices from $34.95 to $59.95. If you don't have one, they will happily send you one for free. I've purchased several items from them in the past and had mostly good experiences with them.

And if it is the wrong one, send it back.

Numberdummy has the appropriate books for the medium duty F-series trucks,

He could cross reference the part numbers and find what would work.

I'll see if I can locate him for you. He doesn't come to this forum as often as the others.

Welcome to FTE

There's more than one type of cable.

With standard heater, or deluxe heater. With 370 or 429 engine. With or without Air Conditioning.

Look on the old cable for a Ford ID number, post what it is.

Here's one example of three possible cables:

E3TZ18518B .. Temperature Control Cable / Marked: E3TH-18D306-AA or AB or AC / Obsolete

Fits: 1981/86 F/FT600/900.

A search using the Ford Dealer Parts Locater System and the obsolete parts locating system turned up a quantity of 129 (!!) of this particular cable.

btw: Some ppl confuse the F Series with the LN Series, so...just to be sure, post the first 8 digits of the VIN.

Please post the city you live in/near in VA.

It is NOT the same cable!

ford dealer here (the one that actually does anything for you) Better try another dealer! said it was obsolete That's BS!

so now i just moved the lever on top of the heater box (in the engine compartment) by hand. using the fan to regulate the heat.
The heater control cables used on F150/350's are NOT the same as the F600/900's used.

Did the dealer happen to pass along the part number, and/or look on their computer to see if another dealer had the cable, since they claimed it was obsolete?

I'm guessing they did not look. I'm also guessing they never even bothered looking up the part number, and just shined you on, because...

The cable(s) are NOT obsolete.

There are two different cables for your application:

E4TZ18518A .. Heater Temperature Control Cable / AVAILABLE from Ford.

Fits: 1984/86 F150/350 & Bronco.

MSRP: $31.97 // FTE Ford Dealer sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $25.70.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
E4TZ18552B .. Heater Air Control Cable / This cable is also AVAILABLE from Ford.

Fits: 1985/86 F150/350 & Bronco.

MSRP: $23.02 // PARTSGUYED.COM price: $16.57.

WOW!

Even though mine is now functioning properly, I woulda expected them to be much pricier.

Parts

So far I am not finding the cable that controls the amount of heat.

The partsguyed site lists them as discontinued.

For 10 or 20 bucks a new cable would be better than a 25 year old cable which could break the first time used or last another 25 years.

Looks like it might have to be a trip to a salvage yard.

Sschevel, What year, engine, and model is your truck?

The cables are year, and engine specific.

The cables also changed in 1983, and again in 1984.

The Temp control cable for 1980-1982 F-100/F-350 are obsolete.

Heater cable needed

Sorry I missed your post!
I went by a salvage yard and they only had a 96 and newer F150s on the lot!

Anyway, I still have not found that heater control cable and was wondering if I should simply look for the correct spring steel wire to swap out and then remake the ends myself. It is an idea I have not seen anywhere.

I have the 85 F150 base model with the 5.8L HO engine. 4X4 and if I did it correctly I attempted to post a photo on this site.

Also would like to find a rear view mirror, factory lighter plug and socket, and a cluster with factory tach.

Thank you!

I'd recommend the wrecking yard for most of that stuff. It looks like the temp control cable has become obsolete as I cannot find it either. You may PM numberdummy and he may be able to find you one in the obsolete parts database.

Any 1980-1986 or later for the lighter element and socket. You can also get a universal fit one from most auto stores. Just find a factory **** in the wrecker and put the **** on the new element.

The rear view mirror, look in any 1980-1996 F-series, Bronco, Econoline, etc... they all have the same type day/night mirrors or the standard optioned rear view mirror.

I am trying to find a new or good used temp control cable for an "82" F-350 4x4 pickup. It has the heater control panel with the fan , off, heat ,defrost, and on the right side is fuel tank selector switch. engine is a 400 cu. 2bbl. so far no luck , finding a cable. In Escondido , Ca. anyone who has one for sale please contact me. Jimmingus@yahoo.com Also trying to find a set of tubular style mirrors that will bolt up to match a ford universal mirror bracket. I have the flatbar style now and want tubular.
