Front end work

Hello everyone, I have a buddy that has a 1958 ford truck. He was telling me that he wanted power steering in it. How hard would it be to add this to it? He said that he was thinking about a rack & pinion set up but that he didn't want to lower the truck any. I told him that he could use a mustang II front end but this would lower the front end.

What do ya'll think about this?

Thanks Hector

You can use a Toyota 4X4 steering box. There are several F100 parts houses the have adapter kits and instructions. Check out John's F-Fun Hundreds. John's F-Fun Hundreds-Home They have a power assist unit that looks fairly simple.

Good luck!

58 F-100

Thanks for the info. I haven't seen my buddys truck but is there a chance that a gear box could be bolted in for power steering? My brother inalw and I did this to his 65 F-100 and it worked great. We had to change the steering colum to make it work but he also wanted tilt steering. Would this work on a 58 F-100?

The Toyota box is pretty much bolt in with the kits. He would also need to add the power steering pump and brackets to the front of his motor.

It would be a lot simpler than trying to install the Mustang II unit.

There is a company that makes a rack and pinion kit that bolts the rack to the solid front axles. If his truck does not have the twin I-beam type that may be an alternative too. It is a little more involved than simply bolt on though.
