Replacing valve guides

If there is a thread on this, I'll be darned if I can find it. Has anyone replaced the valve guides in their Y-block? I've got a '62 292 in my '55 and I can't determine if this is something only a machine shop can do or if I can accomplish it myself. My local shop is saying $500 to "do" the heads - that's a ballpark, depending on what needs to be replaced. I'm not attempting to rebuild the motor, just get the old beast to quit fogging the mosquitoes in the neighborhood when I run it. I'm over budget as it is and $500 for head work on a motor that I just want to 'get by' with for now is way too much money.

The Ford manual I got from Mid50 does a horribly poor job of describing the process. In fact - skips over it completely.

Isn't there a rubber seal that fits over the stem?

if tht valve guides are bad you need a machine shop. if it's the valve seals than you can do it yourself without removing the heads.

Ok - grumpy46, thanks for the input. I thought that might be the case. I'll try replacing the guides. I'm going to go ahead and pull the heads back off and run through the valves and hand grind them a little. Unless I have an issues with a "lazy" valve is there any reason to get all crazy replacing the valve springs while I'm in there?

springs should be ok unless your changing the cam to a bigger lift
