PC Anti-Virus Question

Recently bought a new pc and it came with a 30 day Norton AV program. When I go to install a new AV, can it be installed while this one is still running or should it be installed after this one is uninstalled? I am not real computer savvy. Thanks for your thoughts. And Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!

IMNSHO, Norton IS a virus!

I suggest un-installing Norton, and get either AVG or Avast Anti-virus.
Why??? They're both FREE (with FREE updates)!

If you want the warm and fuzzy feeling that comes with a 'paid' subscription, I highly recommend "PC-cillin" Anti-virus.

I've NEVER had a virus on any of my pcs (can't say the same for my wife or son's pc, though).

AVG or Avast are really good programs.

Download/purchase the program you want to use.
Lastly. . . un-install Norton. (They may make you go through their website for removal.)
Then, install your preferred anti-virus.

I'm with Keith and Modar...Norton is worse than putting a 9mm to your harddrive and pulling the trigger.
I use AVG and have had 1 minor glitch(my fault). When I used Norton..way back when, all I had was problems.

AVG here also. First step is to remove norton FIRST then install avg.Free edition is fine,I also run spybot,,Spybot - Search & Destroy©® 1.6.2
If you don`t remove nortonfirst then it will have a conflict with 2 antivirirus programs trying to run simultaneously, which is all bad.good luck

I have AVG on one computer and Norton on the other. Norton has caught more bugs, but I surf more with the Norton machine.

I've had trouble with Norton at times, but their tech support has helped me out. Both times required a reinstall which is a long, but doable process.

Don't know which is better, but the free AVG is a crippled version of the one they sell. Never tried Avast.

As for the trial version -- shut off any automatic scanning and it shouldn't be an issue. Donjamer( I think that it was him) says that Norton 09 goes completely dormant if it's not updated.

If you do remove it, go to Norton support and get the removal tool.

I have a trial Norton 06 on the machine with AVG, and it causes no issues -- scans are turned off, and it can't update.

The Norton antivirus seems decent, and it's faster than it used to be. Their other products (Norton 360 etc ) are supposed to be bad.

There was a thread just recently about a free Microsoft antivirus. I have my doubts about it, but many seem to like it.

I also run Spybot.

Seven years on Avast with Zone Alarm firewall, no problems. I have also used a wireless router for the last couple years, and that has cut down on the number of attempt alerts I get from Avast.

Norton will interfere with any other anti virus you install, heck, Norton should be uninstalled anyway. IMO you are better running with NO virus protection that with Norton.
I have had no trouble in 5 years with Avira AntiVir and Comodo firewall.

Download the Antivirus program before uninstalling the Norton, though. After making sure everything "Norton" is gone, then install your new program. Some require you to go back online to register and/or finish the final installation functions.

You are not going to be attacked immediately as soon as you go online....although you may "feel" like that ("neked").

I used to use SpyBot S&D and LavaSoft's AdAware. But now use Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware.

I used to use AVG Free 7.5 but decided to try AVAST instead after buying this computer in late 2007. Haven't had any glitches with it and it actually stopped a trojan from downloading through a popup when visiting a site previously thought "safe".

dump the norton virus! I think norton writes viruses so it can catch them and look good! AVG is free and I haven't had a virus in any of my computers in 8+ years.
