Hello. I have a steering column from an '88 Ford Ranger that I am putting in my hot rod. I do not have the wiring from the truck. Can someone help me with a wiring diagram to connect things where they need to go please? Thanks. Perley
All that I really need is a pin-out of the column plug. There are 11 pins in this plug and I need to know what's what, like which are directionals, which is the starter/ignition, etc. Can someone help out please?
The 11 pin connector (two rows of 5 pins with one at the end) is all ignition switch connections.
With the single pin facing to the right:
the top left pin has no connection to it.
the next pin to the right connects to a black wire with light green hashmarks and in run or acc position feeds the fuse panel and the instrument cluster voltage regulator.
the third pin in the top row connects to a brown wire with a pink stripe and in the start position feeds the ammeter, voltage regulator and coil.
the fourth pin connects to a red wire with a light green stripe and in the run position feeds the ammeter, voltage regulator and coil
the last pin in the top row connects to a red wire with a light blue stripe and in the start position feeds the starter relay.
at the bottom row starting from the left:
the first and second pins connect to yellow wires and are hot at all times. they are fed from the battery to the ignition switch layers.
the third and fourth pins connect to gray wires with yellow stripes and in the run position feed the heater blower, cruise control, turn/stop/hazard/backup lights, exhaust oxygen sensors heat.
the last pin on the right in the bottom row, closes the engine temp light circuit for lamp test.
the pin on the far right, closes the brake warning light circuit for lamp test.
To 5.0B2 ---- Thank you sincerely for that information. I will check my wiring harness against that. Now things come into focus. Without this info I didn't have a clue, NONE. I've been puzzling for days, couple weeks on it. I know a little about wiring, more-so on house wiring, but some electronics, and from what little I know, I couldn't attempt it. Many thanks again and Happy Holidays to you. Perley
P.S. Had a little time to digest that --------- question now is what about directional lights, hazard lights, dimmer switch, wipers, (more?) Where do they go? Nothing mentioned in the preceeding. Perley
they connect through the multifunction switch - turn signals, wiper/washer, dimmer. horn and cruise buttons through another harness plug - can identify these connection if you need them.
Oh Man, you are a life saver! Please do send more info. But---I don't remember seeing another plug on the column! I'll go out and check in a bit. Yet, there has to be another, right? It does have turn, wiper, hazard, dimmer --------- So there must be! At my age it doesn't take much to mess me up! haahaaa. Thanks again.
HEY! what a dummy I am. I found three more sockets for plugs. Two are semi circular and the third is square(more or less). First one, semi-circular, kind of at bottom of column, close to the hazard button, has five contacts, a gray socket. Next is up around on side and is more towards the bottom of the column (toward motor end). Looks like it may be the wiper/washer plug?? It has 5 contacts too. And the last, another semi-circular, is around on side towards directional/dimmer lever, also has 5 contacts. Thank you sincerely for your help. I don't know how I missed these what with as much as I've handled that column and time spent working on shortening it.
Click on my screen name (5.0B2) and select "send private message to......" send me you address and I'll mail you copies of the pages in the Electrical and Vacuum Trouble shooting Manual with pictures and diagrams of those sockets/switches.

Thank you so very much Dean. Address on it's way to you. I really really appreciate that. I have a full wiring harness now, thanks to a friend on another forum, with all of the plugs and such, but I've no idea where all those connections are supposed to go. I know a little of the principle of the multi-function switch, but not where all the contacts go. Bless you my Friend. Perley
Thank you very very much Dean. I received the copies last week while we were at our Daughter's in Ct. Had a great Christmas, hope you did also. Thanks again. Perley
