I have a 2001 F150 with the 4.6 engine, engine has about 85,000 miles on it and it has developed a severe ping and a marked loss of power under acceleration, especially when you get up to 65-70 mph. It also has developed a bit of a rough idle. I removed the throttle body and cleaned the egr passages, still does it. It throws a code (don't remember the #) of a multiple cylinder misfire. Any suggestions?
I'd be checking the COPs(coil over plugs)I would venture to guess that it still has the original plugs in,so I'd change the plugs, along with whatever COP or COP's that are bad.I like to gamble at times,so I'll put my money on CYL.# 3 as one of the CYLs.with the mis-fire.That code would be P0303.Other causes for the mis-fire could be an injector,or poor fuel or to low of octane. The code will tell you what CYL. has the mis-fire.Was the only code you had,for the mis-fire?or were there others? The pinging is not something that you want to let go on,it can lead to burnt valves.I'd find the cause of the mis-fire and change the plugs and COP first, that may take care of the pinging.I'd put a new fuel filter on as well.I change mine 2xs a year. good luck.
The #6 coil went bad the other day and I replaced it and cleared the codes and it ran fine until a few days ago when the pinging began. It persitantly got worse. I pulled the throttle body today and cleaned the egr ports (they were nearly blocked) and it seemed to make it worse. Took it for a test drive and and it threw the multiple cylinder misfire code. I had about 1/2 a tank of fuel and I topped it off with premium and that did not seem to help. I am going to replace the fuel filter and see what that does. I don't think it is a coil this time, do you think it could be the DPFE sensor? It turned the CEL back on and I will check that code again and record the code number this time.
I checked the code and I am getting a P0302 code #2 cylinder misfire detected. I replaced the COP, the spark plug, and the injector and I am still getting the same code. I thought by some rare chance my new coil was bad (a Motorcraft) so I swapped it with the #1 one cylinder. I also checked the fuel pressure and it is showing 35 lbs. It actually goes up to almost 40 psi when you rev the motor up a little. I changed the fuel filter and cleaned the MAF. Still getting a P0302 code. Truck doesn't run too bad until you get up to 50 or 60 mph and then it begins to miss and ping and will then turn the CEL on. I do not know what else to try, any suggestions?
Sounds like a classic bad gas problem i work at oreillys and have people spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on parts that so and so told them to get because they think this is the problem or that is the problem. When to come to find out its always something like a vacuum line or bad gas lol. If you haven't yet fill it up with high octane and get some lucas injector cleaner and run it through the system and see if that helps anything ...
When this started the truck had about 1/2 a tank of fuel and I topped it off with premium (also ethanol free) from a station here in town. It did not seem to help, in fact I believe it is getting worse.
