Did Ford manufacture it's own exhaust systems, or did they farm them out to an external company? And if #2, then whom? Referencing 1980's if it makes a difference, which I'm sure it would.
They engineered the systems in house, but several independent companies made them. These companies went out of business several years ago. They never released merchandise to the public, all parts were strictly Motorcraft.
Interesting question, drumfield. Welcome to the forum!
The original systems certainly held up well. I have a 1986 F-150, 4.9L carburated engine with two inline catalytic converters and single muffler with over the axle rear outlet. Every piece, even the hangers, is still intact with 136,750 miles.
Wish I could say the same for mine. PO decided at some time to "dual it out", and didn't do a very good job of it. Kind of makes it hard to do a resto.
