FE Roller rocker question

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with Comp or Harland Sharp roller rockers and what do you think about them. I want to upgrade the valve train in my 390- flat tappet hyd XE274 cam. Also looking at the Comp and H/S shafts as well. The Comp rockers are plain aluminum and the H/S are bronze bushed which may be an advantage. The comp shafts are hard chromed according to Summit's site so they may have an advantage there.

H/S also makes rockers with needle bearings and bigger (.875) shafts but that's more than I want to spend. I also know there are other players out there that have some great stuff but again too pricey for me.

All opinions will be appreciated. Thanks!!

I am running the comp rockers with billet stands and solid spacers and love the combination in my 390. They were on the motor when I got it a couple years ago and have been raced by the previous owner for 6yrs before that I know of and no issues. I am replacing the adjusting screws this year because a couple of them have the section where you put the allen head wrench in to adjust stripped out (ever stripped out an allan head bolt? same deal just used a lot) But that is it. They are still showing no wear on the shaft to rocker surface and I am using them on a solid lifter cam now.

Thanks for your reply.
Good to hear the Comp rockers are working out for you and not wearing on the fulcrum. Do you happen to know if you are using OE style shafts or something different?

These PRW full setups go for about $510.00 for the set through Brent Lykins on Net54

They come with the studs, shafts, center stands, end stands, spacers, washers and 2 adjustable push rods. When you add up what doesn't come in the other kits it's a really good deal IMO. For a DD these are fine.

Thanks for the info and link Redmanbob. I have heard of the PRW setup but never saw a pic or anything. I heard it's made oversea's but dam the kit looks so good I may have to overlook that since like you noted it's really a good deal. I saved the pic and the link to Brent Lykins site I will have to seriously consider it.

Here is another option from Rockerarmspecialties out of Anderson Ca.
This is a set I purchased from them, and notice the solid pedestal which eliminates flex.

That's a sweet looking setup maxtor but probably out of my price range. I tried to google that company but the closest I got was some company in Washington state. I'm only running a flat tappet hyd cam. I'm looking for the most affordable setup I can get with roller rockers, good shafts and end supports for the shafts. If I go with rockers from Comp I'll machine my own billet end stands and use the OEM center stands.

you really don't need the end supports on anything less then a roller cam IMO. Yes overkill is great but not needed.

As far as I know I am running a stock shaft (like I said I bought this motor with the rollers and the shaft, I added the solid spacers and billet stands. but they are standard stands NOT the ones with the extra end support)

Below is there number. I can't remember what it cost me, but it was around $800 to $1,000 for the setup.
My heads are Edelbrock rpm that were ported stage II by Keith Craft. We made 587 hp on the dyno, and with a 200 hp shot of nitrous it should put out 787 hp. I have jets for a 250 stage nitrous, but will not use them. I do not want to tempt fate with that much nitrous.

IMO you want the end stands on anything with a cam that has more than .565" lift & will be flogged past 5400. If just going to a roller rocker assembly for giggles, don't sweat it. But would certainly do new shafts regardless.

thanks maxtor frist off before anything else just to cma sorry barry i spelled your name wrong. now back to you maxtor wow that must be a really nice motor. is it for street are race only. and i was under the impression that a standard block was not up to handling much past the 500hp level, your pushing close to 800 on your motore with the nos whoooa.

I agree with Bob. The stock shafts do not like high rpm.

It is in a 1960 Falcon that will see 95% of its time on the drag strip. 20 years ago, I ran a 428scj engine with 660 hp with two bolt mains for years without a problem. At 800 hp,,, we will see if it holds together. You might ask Barry about that, because he probably has pushed his FE engines to their maximum. If it breaks, I have the scj engine for a backup. We will find out later this year, or next year if it will hold up or not. Our local track closed down for the winter, and the closest track to us that will be open this winter is in Sacramento, which is about 160 miles south of us. I just finished the Falcon one week after the last local race.

Thanks for all the great info guys. I'm getting ends stands one way or the other. Maybe overkill but I'm sensitive to this because I broke the end off of a shaft once a long time ago. It was an almost brand new OEM shaft from Ford and it only had about 500 miles on it- whole fresh motor actually. I was just cruising casually about 5 minutes after a few hot runs when it happened. Maybe a fluke- I'll never know. Ever since then I'm a little paranoid about it. And now that I'm going to a bigger cam and higher spring loads end stands are a must to me.

Way I figure it is if I buy the PRW setup I get end stands and only pay a very modest price or if I buy Comp rockers and shafts which is a little more than the entire PRW setup I can make my own end stands for the price of material. Decisions, decisions, decisions!!
