Russ they DID come out with 4 bolt mains from the factory but how many were ACTUALLY needed in any factory engine (disregard the other brands they don't count LOL)
I know you know about all the guys making over 700hp on factory 2 bolt main big blocks and even FRPP didn't use the 4 bolt mains on the 514 crate motors. yet they DID build 4 bolt mains for the boss 9 and SCJ that weren't anywhere near those hp levels. So in some cases I would have ot say yeah they did it for grins and bragging rights.
That's not to say that cross bolted isn't the way to go when you can.

Like I had mentioned above..some just get lucky on builds...Hell I have a brother in law..the can run a bunch of mix and match parts and never have one break down..LOL.. But thats NOT my luck....
I could be wrong Russ; but I think they mainly went to four bolt mains for high sustained rpm like in off shore boat racing, road racing, and nascar.
Like I wrote above, we will soon find out what happens at between 700 and 800 hp with two bolt mains. If I use all 250 hp of nitrous, it would put out approximately 837 hp. I do not plan on doing that though. I really only want to use enough nitrous to run 10.1 to 10.3 so it might be only 100 hp shot or none at all. I don't know. If all goes well next year, at the last race of the year, I might go to 200 hp shot of nitrous just to see what it will do.
My calculator says that it should run 10.5 on the motor. If so, I would only need a 50 hp shot, but my nitrous system starts at 100 hp. I hope that the engine holds together, but we will see.

Well Rob, you bring up some good points... But also when you look at the mass difference of the caps on a 385 series and the FE.. you can see the differemce also..and your right I know the same guys as you do that are making real big HP with the stroked 460's and 2 bolt mains.. But i guess it comes down too , How often its pounded on and for how long.. Like some get depending on how long there season is..may put a couple hundred pass's on there motor in a season.. Now here where I live the season is only about half of that.. (number of Pass's you make a season)

Then you could get into vehicle weight, how good the tires hook etc..the list goes on..Now Rob that Fly weight Ranger of your shouldnt break any parts !!

LLoyd, Like you said Bud only time will tell....As much as you love that car I hope it runs just fine for you..and the bottom end holds and you dont get any stress cracks in the cam tunnel...

Anyway good Morning Boys...its now 5am and I need some coffee !! been waiting since 4am for some...

Hey Russ;
Who knows, maybe things will change and you can make it out here anyway.

Here it is again..... If I die from "natural" causes and still have the 427, it is yours. If I get hit crossing the street, or sitting in my easy chair by an unknown F250,,, the deal is off. LOL

Yeah Lloyd thats it !!

But knowing you as I do...you'll be hanging a Hi Helex 8-71 blower on that bad boy , and dropping it into the Falcon or the Z-Car !!

I wished I could have bought my neighbors 65 Caliente a couple of months ago...It was a tubbed roller, 4 link and Stang II front suspension...I find out about it after its on the rollback..and see it going piggy back down the road...

I tried to buy it a couple of years ago..but it wasnt for sale then...

Your luck is like mine Russ. I bought my galaxie 350 miles away, and spent the money getting it road worthy then found out about a 67 fairlane. Backhalved, tubbed, 4 link and 10pt cage (no good tires or rim, motor or trans but all else what there) for about half what I had into the galaxie less then 30 miles away.

Actually if I do use the 427, I will build it to near stock and put it in a Cobra kit car. The older I get the less likely that will occur, especially since the new Shelby GT500 is now going for only 47K at Corning Ford.

Well I know where your coming from..... back when I was a young man racing the altered and having a Lake/River boat for fun and ski...between working..and then keeping the altered going and wrenching on the boat...I dont reacll much sleep ? of course back then being in my late 20's I didnt need much.. But between racing every other weekend at one track or another..alot of times if we got beat or broke out and sisnt make the program for sunday..I trailered the car back to the shop and headed home only to grab the boat and drive half the night to the lake...Geez !! I just wish I had half the energy now that I did then..

you guys make me cry as i drink my GERITOL, LOL LOL LOL. anyway back to the topic of this thread. i am fairly new to the fe crowd and after reading most of the post here plus others i have some questons. when i got the motor that i am building i was tolds it was a 427, but of course it was not. i did get a stock bore 390 though,so guess i will be building a stroked 390. so as i am working on the block and getting the rotating assembly together i am learning as much as possible. now in the parts i gotr there is a set of comp roller rockers on stock shafts with stock stands, sring spacers and washers. it has washers and a cotter pin holding this all together on the shafts. i am guessing that this is the standard set up for this. now are these shafts able to support any kind of performance build and what about the center stands, and after looking at the pictures of the end stands that i see on barry's web page i am wondering what holds everything together and are the stock shafts long enough to work with the end supports? what are the advantages of the soild spacers compared to the srings( i probably already know this but the dumest question ever asked was to one that was never asked)and how do you go about making sure that the solid spacers are the correct lenght. are the shafts solid at the ends or are thwere plugs that go in them to keep the pressure in them to supply oil to the rockers( i am a over the road trucker and am not at home to tear them apart right now so please excuse me if some of my questions might sound a little off ). now then if i use the rocker shaft stands offered by barry, the comp roller rockers that i have and the solid spacers, with the stock shafts what are my limits? this will be in a f-150 4 wheel drive auto trans and used for evrything from daily driver to going to the coast for some surf fishing to the mountains for fly fishing plus haulin a trailer around. i am thinking that with the 445 stroker assembly a set of alum. heads a nice daul plane intake and one of the thorttle body style fuel injection systems that are on the market taht i should be able to safely go into the high 500 to 600 hp range with out tomuch trouble. as far as the cam i was thinking a roller cam at this time grind unknown but after getting the truck near completion i have a freind who knows all the folks at holman moody who says with the rightinfo can grind me a cam that will fit my needs. thanks charlie
