Well my tranny is having a hard time shifting into second gear. It is an auto. Not all the time does it have troubles but when it does I have to let off the throttle to get it to shift. Now it seems as though it may be having a little slippage also. My question is, can there be something simple causing this? Or I am in for a new tranny? My mech thinks he has it narrowed down to the solenoid that comes on when shifting into second. There are two solenoids that are in play, one is on from the start and one comes on when you reach shifting speeds. Since the one is on in first gear he feels we can eleminate that one. If this is the case am I just hosed or can there be something simple?
Terry, sorry to hear about your tranny woes but I'm pretty sure in your previous post Mark Kovalosky said you might need a rebuild. Before it gets any worse, I'd call John Woods and get his opinion. No offense to your mech but John is an expert with these tranny's and you could use some expert advice, make the call. Good luck.
Sorry to hear about the tranny Terry. Subscribing to this since I wish to find out about what to look for if a tranny is toast or close to it. I hope yours isn't however, and that there is a relatively simple fix.
Is yours a mechanical diode version? I know mine is.
No offense taken. I know my mech is pretty good but he is not an expert in this tranny. He does know trannies pretty well, just not an expert. With this post I was just looking for any info from anyone who has had these problems or anyone who knows these trannies. I am by no means someone who knows trannies.

I believe it is. This is the second tranny in my truck. At 5k the first one went, through a shift solenoid and took out more with that. Ford replaced it with a new one.

How many miles do you have on your tranny? Mine is at 141k on the tranny, 146k on the truck.

x2, Call John Wood and be done with it once and for all.

If he were an expert on this trans he'd tell you that there is no way that a solenoid can cause that. He'd also tell you about the mechanical diode problem that most 2001 diesel transmissions had. He would also tell you that when the mechanical diode starts to fail it will only make the 1-2 shift when you let off the go pedal. Then he'd tell you that the only way to fix it is to rebuild the trans and get rid of the mechanical diode.
