Thought I'd post up and say hi, I've been trolling in this section of the site for the past 3 days. I just bought a 7.3 f350, 4x4, 5 speed and had some questions. I've worked on diesels before, but it was equipment and not trucks plus it's been 10 years or so.
Among other things, this pickup pours the smoke when you climb on the throttle. I'm still working on the actual mileage, I'm guessing 170k or so. The guy I bought it from didn't know much about it other than it was an outfitter truck that was beat to hell. The smoke is mainly black, but it there's some white/blue to it as well. He told me the outfiitters did turn up the IP...Given the state of the engine, I'm going to say regular maintenance wasn't high on their priority list.
So the questions I got are....
1. If the paint on the injectors matches the fuel rails, they are prolly OEM correct?
2. I had the air cleaner off today, started it up, and watched white vapor stream from the cdr into the intake. I'm guessing the cdr is toast? The intake looks dirty but I didn't crawl up to look inside with a flash light.
3. Are the valves adjustable?
In case your curious...here's the truck in question Diesel Donor
The motor and the rest of the missing parts are going in this....
Sounds like the cdr needs a good cleaning, very common for these not to get serviced regularly. Soak your cdr in gas swishing it every so often until clean. This may take awhile the first time then let air dry (do not use compressed air) it will rupture the diaphram and last I heard they were in the 70 buck neighborhood.
The smoke sounds pretty normal from my experience, these tend to smoke a bit all stock, as theyre NA. Turning the IP up would only make that "problem" worse. If you dont have one i would look into a pyro to make sure she aint gettin too hot inside.
I'm going to install a pyro during/after the transplant. Along with new injectors and I'm giving serious consideration to replacing all the seals and gaskets, including the head gaskets while its out.
On the turbo motor the CDR is located on the drivers side rocker cover.
Much easier to get at.
The mess of wires with the two large yellow ones going to it is the glow plug relay/controller on engines starting in 87 up to 94.
The round silver thing with one single wire on top below and to the right of the large yellow wires is the oil pressure sending unit, which is in a different location on the turbo engine since that is where the turbo oil supply comes from on them.
And where the CDR goes through the valley pan on a NA motor is where the engine oil returns to the motor on the ATS/stock turbo setup.
