latching mechanism? I think there is a cover you can take off and see the connecting rods. Activate the handle and just look at slack or something in there. Just my guess.
There is a long narrow cover near the top of the inside tailgate.
Remove the screws and this cover and the long rods that lock that two ends of the tailgate will be visible-as will be the inside of the handle. Shoot fluid lock graphite lubricant on all of the wear areas. Check and see if the handle will move the long locking rods easier after the lubrication has been applied.
I did this when I installed a lock for my tailgate handle. The lock lubricant really makes a difference. Spray this lock lubricant into your doors locks too-really makes them work like new.

You are welcome ,Sir. That lock graphite lubricant is also great for power antenna. The graphite has great lubricating qualities-but doesnt attract dirt.
I just figured out what was wrong with my stuck tailgate.
I tried lube but no hope
I removed the access panel and the mechanism pulled on the latch OK
but it was still stuck firm
after pulling back the weatherstrip and looking at the latch through the crack from inside the bed, I noticed something white down in the latch
It looked like a granite rock so i got a punch and hammer and crushed the rock
the tailgate opened right up
evidently there is a cup shaped pocket in the bottom of the latch.
when hauling gravel it can get stuck in that pocket causing the latch to not fully open
I cleaned the gravel out of both latch mechanisms and it works again
