Hi, I was wondering if I back off the nuts that hold the tailgate locking posts, will that allow me to open up the tailgate? These are the nuts that you can access through the rear stake hole's. I already tried the removing of the access plate on the gate, with no luck at all, and thats not the answer for this problem. Previous owner must have never opened it up, or oiled it ever. It seems to me that the gate may pull the posts through and open, if I remove those nuts.
I removed the access plate, but no amount of effort would free her. I put alot of time into moving the rods, squirting blaster in there. I think that the post may be the answer, was wondering if anyone, maybe a (body man) after a wreck, has had success this way
I just figured out what was wrong with my stuck tailgate.
I tried lube but no hope
I removed the access panel and the mechanism pulled on the latch OK
but it was still stuck firm
after pulling back the weatherstrip and looking at the latch through the crack from inside the bed, I noticed something white down in the latch
It looked like a granite rock so i got a punch and hammer and crushed the rock
the tailgate opened right up
evidently there is a cup shaped pocket in the bottom of the latch.
when hauling gravel or other debris, it can get stuck in that pocket causing the latch to not fully open
I cleaned the gravel out of both latch mechanisms and it works again
