Also something to consider is using that composite decking in place of wood for the slats. I work at a lowes and always kept that in the back of my mind as an option for a flatbed that would never rot.
i think if you want the stock box on the truck, finish the box and put it on. if you want to keep the flat bed on the truck then put that on. i dont think putting on a flatbed until your stock box is finished is the way to go. the cab will get used and weathered by everyday use and the box wont match. the box will always seem newer and cleaner. -virgojeep i like the composite decking idea, then it wont get water logged and weigh a ton when wet.
well as you can see from my name i like flatbeds. i think that they should be the standard bed on any pickup. regular beds get dented and rusty so easy that flatbeds are they way to go. i built one for my 64 in highschool shop and had about $600 of metal in it but it was super heavy duty. dont think i have any pictures of it in my gallery ill have to take some when i get home friday. then again my dad always had old ford work trucks with flatbeds on them growing up so that might have something to do it. with my flatbed tho i dont have to worry about ppl sideswiping me or rearending me and it gives me more wieght for better traction in mud and snow and i can haul whatever i want with out worring about the bottem of the bed getting all dented in.
I prefer a flatbed on my 76 F-250 since it will be used on the farm and it looks good on the truck compared to the old bed that was rusted and bowed. It wasn't that I didn't want to fix the old bed of find a replacement. I just couldn't pass up a free flatbed.
Here are some pics of my flatbed......Its nice because i can use full rack size or a smaller version depending how big a load i may have. I just drive around without the racks a lot of the time.
Looks nice. I personally like a flatbed because it shows that the truck is used and not a pavement princess. Then again some people are happy to let their old truck be for show, so to each their own.
