hesitation---> sucks!

Ok, Ever since I put a different 390 in my truck I've had hesitation. It's been in since August.

Just say I'm at a stop and want to accelerate, it'll hesitate for a second and feel like it's gonna stall on me. But if I give it a little more gas it'll accerate just fine- it doesn't lunge forward hard or anything but you can def tell I'm giving it a bit more gas.

Today I noticed a new symptom while driving on my way to work:

Just say I'm cruising and want to accelerate, the truck will hesitate, drop in rpm's and then when I give it a little bit more gas it'll go where I left off and rmp's will climb. It feels like the engine wants to stall but doesn't. When I'm around 2000 rpm the hesitate occurs the most, anything above 2000 the truck is just fine as I'm speeding up by then.

40 mph seemed to be a confusing speed for me to go because I was around 2000 rpm and the engine would buck/bog/loss power, but if i gave it a bit more gas, it would accelerate just fine.

The harder I hit my gas pedal, the less the hesitation is.

My grandfather said I ought to rebuild my carb. I'm starting to think he's right!

HELP! Keeping my foot heavy on the gas pedal is starting to drain my wallet!

Whatcha think guys?!

I would check for any vaccum leaks, and rebuild the carb,

I agree, vacuum leaks and/or carb issues are likely suspects, is your vacuum advance working and connected to a ported source (above throttle blades) on the carb?

As others have stated, check your timing, vacuum leaks, vacuum advance...and the accelerator pump in the carb will cause this. There are 3 basic "sections" in a carb. Idle, main metering, and power. Power being the accelerator circuit.

I would check and make sure you don't have a vacuum leak. That will be your fastest, and cheapest way to go, rather then spending money on a carb rebuild that may not solve your problem.

However, a rebuild may not be far away!! But first things first!! Check for a leak, and let us know how you made out. If you still have the same problem, then its time to move on! I take it you know how to check for a leak?

Rebuild kits are not expensive.

Like previous posters have said, it sounds like an accelerator pump / vacuum leak issue. Go buy a rebuild kit for your carb. They aren't expensive. Find a nice clean tabletop somewhere. If you're nervous, get a digital camera for documentation purposes (I did this when I changed the head gasket on my wife's Quad Four, and the pictures came in handy when putting the thing back together). Take your time and rebuild your carberator. Cleanliness, cleanliness, cleanliness.

I rebuilt the carb on my F100 because the gaskets were shot and it was leaking fuel, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much better the thing ran.

Sounds like a textbook accelerator pump or vacuum leak condition. The others nailed it.

Forgot to mention- my truck has backfired through the carb twice in the past week while trying to start.

I have to nurse the gas pedal for about 30 seconds then she'll idle on her own. I don't have any choke yet, I'm gonna get a manual one here soon.

Think it's still the accelerator pump?

Vacuum leak or accelerator pump and without driving it I'm not sure which to recommend so I guess check out both. Does it do it worse when cold or when hot? That will help in figuring this out.

Or you could just go ahead and check both of those and we can go from there.

I think I have a stuck thermostat- because my engine is staying cool here as of late. Most of the time my engine heats up fine- once every few days it runs cool (which sucks because then I don't get heat!) I gotta get a new thermostat asap!

The hesitation/bogging is worse when the engine is cold. I can tell that for sure.
