That's the best way I can describe part my latest problem. If I'm stopped at a light, a lot of the time it almost feels like it wants to stall when I first pull out. Then, it seems like it is shifting funny at certain speeds like the transmission can't decide what gear it wants to be in. Tends to do that about mid acceleration (sorry, dont have an rpm gauge to look at). At idle it seems to run fine. Any ideas? My specs should be in my signature, but if you guys need more info, let me know and I'll do my best to provide it. BTW, engine also runs rough with the ac on. Thanks.
If it acts out with the AC on, sounds like an IAC problem & they're a common problem part on idle woes. Maybe remove & clean it with a plastic safe spray & see if things improve. Cleaning the IAC on my 99 didn't last, but was a good trouble shooting step for me. Mine never set a trouble code either.
or even the crank position or camshaft position sensor.
This may be a dumb question but can I still pull codes even though the check engine light isn't coming on? Can I just take it to advanced auto parts or something and have them plug in their scanner even without a light coming on? Thanks.

Pending codes that haven't happened long enough, or often enough to aggreviate the computer to turn the CEL/SES light on, can be stored & read by a scantool, or code reader.
Some stores won't do a code check if the CEL/SES light isn't lit, but some will if we're having problems, so call around & see who in your area will scan without the trouble being lit. If none will, just loosen the gas cap on the drive over there & that'll turn the CEL/SES light on, but you'll know what that code is for...... any port in a storm..... right!!!! lol
Post All code Numbers found, as they can offer up good trouble shooting clues.
Well I just changed my CPS and it was easy thanks to you guys. the noise is gone and I still have a hesitation after i let off the gas and pedal down again..New plugs, wires, air cleaner, cleaned the ICS,MAF,Trottle body, ran all kinds of injector cleaner checked for arcing at nite at the coil and also no codes Have not checked the fuel pressure or changed the filter(12000)miles ago..what else should I look for? 2003 Ranger EDge 3.0 97000miles 5sp manual
I'm getting my truck looked at on Monday by my mechanic. I'll just see what he has to say. I have a bad feeling my tranny may be going because it's slipping from time to time along with the hesitation. If the tranny goes, I get a new truck. No way I'm spending over a thousand dollars or so to have it rebuilt or replaced on a truck that has 165,000 miles on it.
Just to update, drive is basically gone now. I have to shift it into 2nd to get it to go. It won't shift into drive at all. So, I think I am about to part ways with this truck that I've had for 11 years now. Hate to take a vehicle payment back on again, but I think I have no choice now. Since this ranger did right by me for so long, I think I'm going to get another one. I'm looking for something that's less than 5 years old, less than 50,000 miles on it, 4 X 4 this time, etc. Anyway, thanks for the advice as always.
