Last night my E350 started smoking rubber under the hood. I looked and found the serpentine belt broken. This morning in daylight I checked the pullies and all spun except the water pump pully. The fan and pully were completely locked up. I assume that means that the water pump is shot but shouldn't the fan still spin or does the clutch lock up when cold? Any info is appreciated. Thanks
The water pump is out for sure.
And it sounds like the fan clutch is bad off as well.
When the engine has not been running the fluid will drain to the bottom and cause the viscous clutch to turn hard.
Not really locked but hard to turn.
If it will not turn at all, you may have a piece of belt jamming it or the clutch may truely be bad.
If it is not a piece of belt locking your fan clutch you need to change it with your pump as a locked up fan usually is out of balance and it is only a matter of time before it kills the new pump.
Thanks, you were right. The water pump was on its way out, it was leaking at the weep hole earlier but stopped for a while. The fan clutch went and took the water pump the rest of the way. Both were siezed, belt snapped and twisted up. Both have been replaced as well as new coolant, old flushed out. used the fleet charge stuff. The truck is back to running great, hopefully for another 300,000 miles. I forgot what it sounds like for the fan to lock and unlock. It must have been going for a while because the noise differences has been missing for a while. Thanks again for the help.
