427 side oiler
ok my dad is building a 79 4x4 that currently has a 352 in it. For whatever reason he wants to stay with the fe and not go to a 460, but regardless-i recently bought a parts truck for him and the kid said he had a 427 side oiler complete but he didnt know if it ran. My question is that i have never really heard of 1 of these and is it a good idea to rebuild the 427 and put it in or just rebuild the 352. Just looking for some words of advice-im picking the engine up cheap if i get it so thats not an issue thanks guys for your reponses

yes the 427 side oiler is a real engine, problably one of the best engines ford ever built. as far as it being in some kids truck im skeptical.
best way to id one is to see if it has cross bolted mains
is it worth it? personally i wouyld save the 427 for my hot rod and build a 390 for the truck.
427 was an excellent engine and is worth alot of money, a good complete block is worth +$2000 a complete engine 5000-10000
btw if he has a 352, you can easily bore and stroke it to a 390 which has alot more power and will ironically get better fuel economy

No Cougar 'till '67.
The 427 side oiler was a NASCAR motor, and also won Le Mans. It's probably a 360.

You also have to remember some block casting numbers were used on different bore blocks. Sure way to tell a 427 are the 3 crossbolts above the oil pan rail on each side. Also for the sideoiler on the left side you can see the oil galley "hump" and oil galley allen plugs. The block would also have screw in freeze plugs.

Thanks for posting up fellas, I fell asleep while searching. LOL
The furthest I got was this thread that Royce posted in. Even without the pictures, he gives a pretty good description.

BTW, If it turns out to be a 427 Center Oiler that was used as a stationary engine, I wouldn't cry about it.

Here is what a side oiler looks like.
I was going to put it in the 240Z in the background, but it would not fit without major cutting... so it sits in the garage.

Lloyd I know how those pesky little engines awaiting rebuilds get in the way. Since it wont fit in the Z it's just taking up space so what says I come on up an free up some room in your garage for you ? I'll gladly clean the rain gutters and rake the yard for whatever else you have that might bolt to it

Well Bob,, when you come out here, I'll show the rest of the engine. All stock 1966 427 Ford stuff. Medium riser heads, intake, Lemans rods, rare special steel Ford crank, etc... All stock Ford except for the Pistons,,, I think they are Jahns forged, not sure, because my memory is not all that good anymore. I purchased them new twenty years ago, and they are still new in the box. Everything except the heads have been reconditioned and ready for a build. I purchased a set of trick titanium 2.25 valves that will work nicely in the heads or in BT heads.
I still have the 428scj all fresh with new parts and ready to be assembled.
