Why not put a diesel in it, they put 'em in the Rangers in the 80's.
The Early Ford Ranger Diesel Engines
At the present time, a search of RBV sites will net you a number of threads about diesels.
The Mitsubishi 4D55 was one of the engine in the Rangers and so I am seeing in other posts, is still available. The 4D55 was the 4 cylinder diesel was available in the small trucks other than the Fords.
The reason for not using the Cummins, is the weight, same with Mercedes and others. They are all great engines, just weigh 2 or 3 times what a stock V6 weighs.

The cummins BT4 I dont know how you would even fit a BT 6 Cummins into a ranger, It would have to have a huge doghouse coming inside the cab

There are websites and a yahoo group about swapping 4BT Cummins diesels into various vehicles.

Let me google that for you

The 4BT Cummins was put in old bread trucks at one time, I believe they were also used on forklifts and other industrial uses. I'm not sure if the bolt pattern is the same for the automotive 6BT in the trucks, but that is more than likely what transmission you'd end up using, probably out of a Dodge, etc.
